"Manny Herrera called us on the same day (Wednesday) that we contacted Angi. He came out the next day to look at the ceiling plaster repair that we needed. We chose Manny to do the repairs because of all of his knowledge and reasonable price. Our ceiling is at least 60 years old with a feathered design in the plaster that would have to be matched to the rest. He started work on Friday and was completely done on Sunday at 1 pm. He arrived promptly each day and when the work was done the feathering matched! He did an excellent job cleaning up. We would have no hesitation in hiring Manny again! We would gladly recommend him to all our friends and family."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to repair minor plaster cracks or holes yourself, it is generally not recommended for larger jobs or if you want a professional result. Plaster repair can be difficult in practice; proper wall preparation and achieving a smooth, seamless finish that blends with the existing wall requires experience, especially on textured surfaces. Hiring a professional ensures the repair will be durable and last longer, potentially saving you money over time. A pro can also determine if the cracks are from normal expansion or a more serious underlying issue.

You can repair plaster ceilings yourself after the cause of the ceiling damage has been addressed. However, the repair can easily take 5 hours and can be slightly challenging for those without previous experience. If you do decide to flex your DIY muscle, have a helper to help hold the ladder and pass you the tools for safety purposes.

Common causes of ceiling cracks along drywall seams include poor drywall installation techniques, structural issues, truss uplift, and foundation problems. Temperature and humidity also play major roles in ceiling cracks flush with the wall. As the drywall shrinks and expands from major temperature changes or extreme humidity shifts, this can cause the drywall to crack.

How long it takes to repair a ceiling depends on the extent of the damage. Patching a small hole might only take a few minutes, while repairing a water-damaged section of the ceiling could take hours. If there are structural issues, expect your ceiling repair to take several days or longer.

Plaster provides a durable, soundproof, and moisture-resistant finish compared to drywall.
