"Chrissy is an exceptional interior designer! I hired her for ideas to transform my living room, and she went above and beyond. She carefully listened to my preferences and worked within my budget, suggesting creative ideas I never would have considered. Her meticulous attention to detail and proactive communication with vendors were outstanding. The contractors she recommended were professional, immaculate, and delivered amazing results. I couldn’t be more thrilled with how everything turned out, and I will absolutely be using Chrissy’s services again in the future!"

"Once I sent her all the measurements, it took her a little while to get the options back to me.  Overall, they're good designs.  However, they're very simplistic and give general ideas for space planning.  I was hoping to have a better idea for sizes of furniture for the space and some variations on staging.
Jill was very responsive when I did have a question.  I'm not sure how helpful it is to have a virtual design done.  If we lived in similar cities, I'd probably use her again for help with additional designs.

"Order arrived quickly - all in good condition. Have been using them for quite a while now. I love that the pieces lock together magnetically - so no sliding around. You can choose your colors: top and bottom. You do the measuring - they have instructions on how to do that - and it is very simple. Their order department was very accommodating when I called. Would definitely order from them."

"Rae Duncan is the most talented designer and phenomenal renovation partner with whom I have ever worked. My husband and I are working with Rae on a near complete gut rehab of a home we recently purchased and could not be happier with the results. First, she took the time to understand and help us refine our vision for the home and, after just one initial meeting in our new space, she was able to intuit and articulate how to make our vision a reality. Rae brings a deep and talented network of contractors and craftspeople to the fore to create truly custom spaces, within tight budgets and against tight timelines. And she does more than interior design; she creates transformative interior environments. I have worked with other designers, and none have worked as creatively and efficiently as Rae. She exhibits a rare brand of patience and empathy, expressing her creative vision and point of view while treating her clients as true partners in the design process. She also conceives of brilliant solutions to the design challenges inherent to older homes like the one we recently purchased and smaller spaces like the one she helped us stage and sell. Rae's spatial and aesthetic brilliance, coupled with her sensitivity and responsiveness to her clients' needs, make her a truly incredible designer. I would highly recommend working with Rae; she has truly transformed our space in a way we never could have imagined based on our experience with other designers, and helped transform our lives in the process!"

"David gave me what I thought was a fair price for the work to be done. He asked for 1/2 up front. As a previous small business owner I did not feel this was unreasonable so I paid him 500.00. He estimated the work would take 3 to four days and I thought the same. After several no shows the "mason" showed up. The first clue was he came in a car. According to my wife he was here 2 hours and left, came back for another 2 hours the next day and left again. He said nothing to my wife about leaving or when he would be back. David called a day later to ask about coming out to look over the job and get the rest of the other 500.00. I said he isn't finished and he's only been here 4 hours. So then I looked up the prevailing wage in IL for a mason and found out it is 28.50 an hour. The next day the guy comes back for another 3 hours. David came to look at the work and I walked him around and showed him all of the places that had not been done. So the guy comes back again for about an hour. All told it was 8 hours work, nothing to write home about but it was agreed up front that I wasn't looking for an exposed brick look. I need it tuck pointed well enough so that I could drylock and paint the exposed brick. I will say this was done in the end. The worker left a mess that I and my wife had to clean up, I pointed this out to David as well. I told him I felt he was overly paid for the amount of work preformed and that was the end of it. It's really to bad. It's difficult to get contractors to do small jobs and I had plenty for him to do. I'm not unhappy, just would not hire again"

"I feel extremely fortunate to have found Vicki through Angie's List !  She is an extremely talented person who is very easy to deal with. She has a breath of knowledge that allows her to accommodate my tastes, but also ensure that the overall design is in sync with the design and location of my home.  She has  a very diplomatic way of suggesting when I'm going astray with my choices and in every case where she has told me "Trust Me"  I have been delighted ! She is very aggressive in helping me find the best pricing and often times will work with the vendors directly  hence saving me the time.  She also has excellent local contacts.  Everyone I've worked with through Vicki has been timely, professional, and highly competent.
My project is far from complete.  I intend to continue to use Vicki and her expert advice until the end !!!!"

"Gale is a delight to work with. She is extremely knowledgable and narrow down your style by just looking at things you like in a magazine. She has a great eye for design and the ability to pull a few rooms together so that they flow beautifully. Her skill with designing and creating window treatments is awesome.

She made window treatments for our family room,  sun room , and eating area.  They are absolutely gorgeous !  She also helped to pick out paint colors so that the rooms would all compliment each other.  These rooms are now my favorite in the house.

Gale works with any budget and was always willing to tweek projects to make things perfect for you. She will be there on time and is professional. She is also a lot of fun. I looked forward to her visits and will be using her again in the future.

"I found this company during an internet search and I filled out a form. Within 20 minutes we were contacted by Jeff who explained what he did and how he could help us. We were so impressed by his quick response and explanation that we hired him the next day to help us find a home. At the time, we were living outside of Chicago. We arranged a day we could come to the city and look at homes. Jeff provided us with a website of homes on the market that fit our requirements. He had us pick out 6 homes we would like to visit and when we came to Chicago, he had arranged visits at all of them. We met him at his office and he then drove us to each house. We really liked one that we had visited but wanted time to think it over. The following week we wanted to return and take another look at the house. Jeff arranged to meet us and show it to us again. The house needed lots of work including a new roof, so Jeff arranged for a company to come do an estimate on the roof before we even made an offer. After which, we decided to make an offer on the house. He walked us through the entire process and helped us along the way. He helped us find an inspector, mold inspector, lawyer, and even a loan officer/lender. He was extremely helpful in making sure that we were always in the know about what was gong on. He made our first home buying experience as enjoyable as possible. I would recommend him to all my friends and family!"

"My husband and I are very happy with our bathroom and hallway, both projects recently completed by Tom's teams (Modern Home Remodelers). The crew was timely, clean, and all the work was done within our original budget. Additionally, MHR accommodated our busy schedules and was able to reschedule last minute.
Though we had an idea of what we wanted in mind, Tom helped up to realize our vision. The bathroom was renovated into a monochromatic, modern design, with a tiled-in tub, double-vanity and brushed nickel fixtures.
The crew ensured the space was kept clean. During the remodeling phase the crew rid the bathroom of dust, and at project end, ensured the space was free of debris and other left-overs. I highly recommend Modern Home Remodelers. Ask for Tom."

Interior Design and Decorating questions, answered by experts

It is usually worth it to hire an interior decorator, especially if you want your home to have cohesiveness and look like it belongs in a catalog. Interior decorators can be quite expensive, but decorating isn’t an ongoing cost, so you can expect to pay once for the service rather than on an ongoing basis. Interior decorating can be especially worthwhile if you’re selling your home, as house staging can make your property feel more welcoming and help buyers envision themselves living in the space.

Deciding to hire an interior designer or an interior decorator is entirely dependent on what you’re looking for out of your project and your budget. Interior decorators typically cost less than interior designers, both in hourly rates and overall project costs.

If you want to add furnishings to your home but it’s otherwise set with permanent fixtures, an interior decorator would be best for you. However, if you are looking to remodel your home or are building a new home and would like help with permanent structures like cabinets, showers, and overall layouts, an interior designer is best.

A chandelier can last 10 to 50 years or more, depending on its quality, usage, and maintenance. High-quality chandeliers made of durable materials like crystal, brass, or wrought iron tend to have longer life spans. Regular cleaning, timely light bulb replacement, and proper care can extend its life significantly. Vintage or antique chandeliers can sometimes last for generations with proper restoration and upkeep.

If your chandelier is flickering, it may just need new bulbs or wiring, so consider repairs before replacing it.

British architect John Nash is credited with creating the Italianate style of architecture. The style was further popularized in the U.S. by landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing and architect Calvert Vaux. The style spread across the U.S. due to Downing’s popular book on the style and the availability of plans and materials due to the mass production of the Industrial Revolution.

Mid-century modern design focused primarily on two things: simple, functional furniture, often with geometric shapes, and specific color palettes that included earth tones and what we’d today call retro colors. Furniture often blended different materials, like teak or oak wood, with vinyl, metal, and glass. Common mid-century modern paint colors included browns, reds, burnt oranges, yellows, aqua greens, and whites.
