"Oliver was great to work with. His work is excellent. I appreciated his work ethic and willingness to "go above and beyond." He was able to complete a relatively small masonry job very quickly. I HIGHLY recommend him. John Patterson"

"Jon and his team were outstanding. They were extremely professional with quick and effective communication. His level of expertise was evident in both his scoping of the job and in his work. When I asked for additional repairs, beyond the original scope, Jon was able to fit this extra work in for a much lower price than I expected. All the work done was top quality, and their cleanup at the end was commendable. I enthusiastically recommend JPL Masonry!"

"If you are looking for standard, run-of-the-mill brickwork, I am sure there are several good masons around. But, if you are looking for true restoration professionals with a comprehensive understanding of their craft, capable of tackling challenging and difficult projects while producing results which will easily exceed your expectations – you need to hire Henry and Dennis. Their extensive industry experience shows in their attention to detail, knowledge of materials and techniques, and (most importantly for your peace-of-mind) the ability to apply their skills to make years of masonry deterioration and damage virtually disappear. What they can achieve is as much art as craft, all with a straightforward, honest, no-nonsense approach which carries forward throughout the project. Whether you need to rescue a historically-significant structure, or just a gem you call your own, I’m convinced you cannot do better than H.M. Staggers."

"I had a new cap, the top six courses of brick replaced, and the rest tuck-pointed on my fireplace chimney. The chimney looks new, the worksite looks as though they were never here. Hardworking, respectable guys who would always take time to answer questions. Beautiful work at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended."

"Professional work and even took care of a significant chimney issue that they did not create and that took an extra hour or two to resolve. Jim rushed over to our house, instructed his crew about what to do, stayed to make sure things were done right and did not charge us anything additional. This is a high class business and Jim Calzante is an honest professional that knows how to take care of a customer. I highly recommend Calzante Construction."

"I needed my chimney rebuilt from the roof line up. I picked a brick that was not available so they chose for me and it was a perfect match to my roof and siding. The team was very polite and they cleaned up everything very nicely. Would recommend them to family & friends."

"We were in the process of selling our home and the inspection had identified some beam and joist issues in the crawl space. We had Atlas Restoration, among several other providers, come out to submit a bid. The Atlas Restoration bid was extremely competitive and they were able and willing to work in the extremely tight time frame we had to provide the buyer with proof of completion. They went above and beyond to work with us throughout the process, completing it in 2 days even though it meant keeping the crew there a bit later one day - and Rick, our site manager, even met with the buyer and the buyer's inspector to walk them through the work that was completed. (The inspector reported that the work looked great!) From the beginning to the end, Atlas Restoration was great to work with - a huge thanks to Gary, Rick, Cookie, Stacy and all of the others at Atlas Restoration who helped complete the project.

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Certain towns and homeowner associations (HOAs) ban brick mailboxes because of the risk of obstruction. They are sometimes only permitted in cases where four or more homes share a mailbox. Homeowners may need to obtain special permits in some locations. One of the top masonry contractor hiring tips is to ask a local pro if they can show you examples of recent work that meets local code regulations.

Yes, masonry is more expensive than concrete because the labor is much more involved. With masonry, your expert will build your project from the ground up, one piece at a time, ensuring they use the proper amount of mortar or grout during construction and keeping the project level or plumb. Pouring concrete can also be labor-intensive, but it’s a bit less involved. It requires building a mold, pouring the concrete, and letting it cure. The less intensive labor makes concrete a more affordable option in most cases.

In some cases, black stains on brick are caused by organic substances like algae and mold. However, it's more likely that the black spots you're noticing on your bricks come from carbon from vehicle exhaust or soot. Black stains can usually be removed by scrubbing the brick with a brush and masonry cleaner or power washing.

Mortar and thinset both serve the same purpose—tile adhesion—but have different compositions and use-cases. Thinset is heatproof and presents a wide range of possibilities due to the added polymers. Mortar is typically used for bonding stones and brick. Thinset is rarely used outside, while mortar is rarely used inside.

This is largely dependent on the size and hardness of the rock, but a range of tools might work, including hammers, chisels, rock hammers, sledge hammers, and more. You'll need a jackhammer for the very biggest rock-breaking jobs.
