While an air conditioner can temporarily run with a dirty filter, it is not recommended as it will not work efficiently. Once you turn off the system to let it unfreeze, check it periodically to make sure the drain pan doesn’t overflow. For the most part, you should leave your AC fan in “auto” mode so that it only runs during a heating or cooling cycle. Keeping it in this position uses less energy, which equals lower utility bills.
