Customers say: Quick response

"We chose Devin & his crew, via his day rate, to tackle a big job that involved nearly every service he offers: tree removal, shrub removal, tree trimming, pruning, stump grinding, and cleanup. We found him and his crew very professional yet personable, hard-working, knowledgeable, skilled, efficient and conscientious. We give Devin our 5-star review because there really wasn't anything he could have done better and he did everything (and more) that we asked for at a very reasonable price. As Devin says, "we work this hard EVERY day." If you want work done well, Devin and his crew are your folks."

Customers say: Quality work

"This was the first company to respond and I decided to hire them. Their estimate was very close to the others. A small amount of damage was done when felling the trees but it was minor and they did the repairs in a timely manner and very professionally. I like the guys who did the work. I had 3 trees taken out and they were all very big and close to the house. John kept in contact with me throughout the whole job. I would hire them again."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Opt for a barefoot tree. Pros harvest barefoot trees when they’re dormant (leafless). They shake the dirt from the root ball and pack it in moist material.

These trees can cost half as much as the trees at your local nursery, and you can buy them online—so there’s a much wider selection. Just make sure you keep your barefoot tree cool until you’re ready to plant it.

You should avoid cutting off the top of mature cherry trees. This process is called tree topping, and it’s not recommended for cherry trees—or any trees, for that matter. Tree topping removes between one-third to half of the length of the tree trunk, resulting in structurally unsound, fruitless suckers. The only exception is for saplings. Young pie, sour, and tart cherry trees that are over 30 inches tall in the fall or winter before the tree blooms can benefit from heading cuts.

Tree removal costs typically don’t include stump removal, as that technically falls into a different service. The company you hire may offer the service for an additional fee; ask them if they offer it to ensure you get the best tree stump removal costs possible.

The best time to transplant a tree is when it is dormant. For many trees, this means either in the fall after the leaves have dropped (around October or November) or in early spring before new growth begins (around March). The ideal timing can depend on the type of tree. Deciduous trees do well when moved in early spring or fall, while evergreens are best transplanted in early spring or late summer. For example, pine trees are best moved in early fall, but maples prefer late fall. Avoid transplanting in winter, as the frozen or hard, cold soil poses a significant risk to the roots and prevents the tree from acclimating properly.

If executed correctly your tree should survive after being transplanted to a new spot. However, effective transplanting requires six months, careful root pruning, safe transport to the new location, and replanting in prime soil conditions. You’ll also need an appropriately sized root ball for a complete tree transplant. A good rule of thumb is that, for every inch in diameter, your tree’s root ball needs to be around 11 inches. So a tree with a diameter of six inches needs a root ball of approximately 66 inches.
