"Widened and leveled my driveway, added new gravel and compacted it and added a drainage grate to my garage. Very professional and knowledgeable. Was able to accommodate my schedule. Finished the work in about 8 hours. Very happy with the result."

"Todd and his crew were great! Their bid was on the lower end compared to other contractors who bid on my project, but I feel that we got great value for my money. Todd was very helpful with making sure we were comfortable with how the driveway would look before the pour and answering any questions we had along the way about the work."

"Justin was great 👍. Repaired and sealed 25 year old asphalt and it looks brand new, no kidding..... Work done accordingly to schedule. Came back to check on the drive a few times to be sure we were happy. Price was fair. Not high and not the cheapest from non professional companies."

"AMP replaced my old deck and added a pergola. Because I decided to keep the existing under carriage they leveled and added more support for the new decking which went both horizontal and lateral. All waste material was cleaned daily and the work was completed in a timely fashion at a reasonable rate. They did an outstanding job and I highly recommend AMP Construction for any building project."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Asphalt, which is stone mixed with tar, is the most common material for outdoor basketball courts because it’s so sturdy and versatile. However, you don't have to use it: another option is polymeric rubber, which has shock pads that can prevent injury. This option is a little more expensive, ranging between $16 and $25 per square foot.

Materials used for indoor basketball courts, such as hardwoods, aren’t really an option outdoors.

A solid driveway starts with the right asphalt mix, and for most homes, dense-graded hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the most recommended. It’s both durable and flexible, making it a reliable choice for residential use. A properly compacted 2-3 inch layer on a well-prepared crushed stone base will hold up for years. In areas with harsh winters or scorching summers, a slightly modified mix can help prevent cracking and rutting. No matter the climate, quality installation is just as important as the material itself, so hiring an experienced contractor ensures a smooth, long-lasting driveway built to last.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

A driveway's lifespan varies by material. Asphalt driveways typically last 15 to 30 years, while concrete driveways last longer, between 20 and 50 years. The longevity of any driveway is affected by factors like extreme temperatures, heavy traffic, and the quality of maintenance. Regular upkeep, such as filling cracks, resealing the surface, and ensuring proper drainage, can help extend its life. For gravel driveways, regrading to fill in uneven areas every year or two is recommended.

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.
