Roaches won’t sting your pets and don’t have venom like spiders do , but they present other dangers. Cockroaches are notorious carriers of diseases like salmonella and parasites like tapeworms. Because they’re so dirty, their bites (otherwise harmless) can also get infected. You don’t want your pets chasing and trying to eat cockroaches, or sleeping near a roach infestation. 

While vinegar doesn’t get rid of spider webs that already exist, spraying a mixture of vinegar and water in areas where you’ve found webs before will deter spiders from rebuilding there. The acetic acid within vinegar can harm and kill spiders, so they’ll want to stay as far away from this strong-smelling substance as they can get. 

Although raccoons aren’t particularly picky regarding food, certain sounds, metals, and smells bother them. You can place these items around your home to keep raccoons away:

  • Place wire mesh screens around and underneath decks and porches to prevent raccoons from nesting. 

  • Put metal sheeting around the edges of your roof or at the base of trees to deter raccoons from coming close. 

  • Place a loud battery-operated radio near the raccoon’s den to keep them from nesting.

  • Keep a bowl of cider vinegar on your deck or porch.

  • Remove old raccoon scents by thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting underneath porches and decks.

Scarecrows and lifelike animal decoys, such as snakes, owls, coyotes, foxes, and hawks, can initially deter rabbits. However, these tactics might lose effectiveness if rabbits learn they are harmless. Having your dog or cat roam and mark the yard with their scent can also prove beneficial. Keep in mind tactics like these work best when combined with other methods.

While you may be hearing squirrels running around your attic at night, these animals are usually more active during the day.
