"

I asked Rick from Universal Electric to give me a bid on instaling electrical for motorized blinds that I had purchased.  He worked with the blind company to understand the equipment and installation needed and then came out to my house to see where they would be installed.  Because of the way the addition on my house was built, there was no way for him to run electricity to the 8 floor to ceiling windows that the blinds were for without removing a lot of drywall.  He patiently explained to me everything that would be involved and made sure he understood exactly what I wanted the end product to look like.  Although it meant he would not get the work, he suggested that for me to be truly happy with the result I should switch to battery operated blinds.  Although I chose to take his suggestion and go with the batteries rather than the expense and mess of what my original plan would have been, Rick was very gracious and professional through the whole process.  I am extremely impressed that he was more interested in my happiness than his own ability to make a buck.  I will definitely call Rick for any electrical needs I have in the future.

"Work was done quickly and expertly and carries a 3 year warranty. Cost is based on project not time to preform which sounds like a benefit. I had one electrical outlet installed on outdoor front patio taping power inside right behind new outlet. Parts maybe $50; time on project 40 mins as he also checked two switches at front door too. Cost? $729. My fault I guess. I’m new to Iowa and didnt know the electrical code but I should have done it myself. No complaints about the work though."

"Great job! Installed a dishwasher where there had not been one before. Removed the cabinets, etc. Once everything was hooked up, he ran a short cycle to ensure no leaks. While that was happening, he completed a few extra jobs that I had pointed out when Josh came over to give me a very reasonable estimate. This included securing a hand rail that another contractor just secured into the drywall not into the studs like Josh did, etc. Josh truly is a handyman who knows about many things. Getting that list ready again!"

"Ryan came out and bid the job. We told him what we wanted, and he made several suggestions. We demoed the kitchen ourselves to save money. We got all new cabinets, cut out half of one wall to open up the dining room and kitchen. We bought the tiles for the backsplash. Cabinet Clad, contracted the drywaller, electrician, and cabinet installer. | |The only negative is that there was never a set time when each subcontractor would arrive on the day specified, so basically, the month long project was a bit taxing, since we had to hang out around here and put so many things on hold. | |The subcontractors were all trustworthy, friendly, and did quality work. |We loved Zach, who installed the cabinets, opened the kitchen by cutting the wall and creating a header. | |Legendary Stone did the granite counters. We love the final result! We would recommend Cabinet Clad for any kitchen project!"

"AHS is ok. They cover repairs of most everything under the roof of your house. The companies that contract with them are not always the best. You call AHS with the issue, they send a fax to the repair company and give you the contact info. If they don't contact you within 24 hours, you call them. Sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't. When they arrive (usually three days or so later), they service the item. if it has issues within the 90 days, you call AHS again, they are sent out with no charge. If the serviceman decides the unit is unrepairable, AHS will allow you to choose a replacement from their listing (usually not as good as what you have) they will install and remove your old item, or give you wholesale amount to buy and install your own. Prices vary on what you want covered and what you want the copay to be, plus where you live. For me it is 49.99 per month with a 75.00 time of service order. You can have more than one item serviced at the same time under the same fee. If you have a SEAR product the repair guys are great. Not that wild about the other ones they send out. But it is a big savings compared to calling someone on your own. The cost of service is only the 75.00 copay."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Natural gas and electricity rates vary significantly based on location, and pricing can change over time, too. It’s possible that in locations where natural gas is particularly inexpensive, it will cost less than grid-based electricity will. However, you should also factor in the generator’s initial costs and maintenance needs, as well as its noise level and if it can comfortably power all your home appliances.

Generators run on a variety of fuel types, ranging from natural gas to solar power. Keep in mind that fuel costs varying by type:

  • Natural gas: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Liquid propane: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Diesel: $3,000–$20,000 per year

  • Gasoline: $500–$3,000 per year

  • Solar generator: $2,000–$25,000 per unit

  • Battery backup: $10,000–$25,000 per unit

Yes. You can connect your home back-up battery to a generator with its designated charger. Be sure that the output of the generator matches the input requirements for the battery for best results.

DIY is possible for basic setups. Professional installation ensures safe and proper electrical connections.

These advanced generators use a key fob or a smartphone app to remotely start, which is ideal for getting power back on immediately without venturing outside. This feature is more common on whole home generators, but you may be able to find it on large portable generators, too.
