"Daniel was extremely responsive, positive from hearing description of my electric problem, offered same day assessment. Once he diagnosed the problem and described plan of treatment, I was able to relax. Daniel immediately searched for replacement materials and committed to fixing the next day. The new ceiling lights installed with damaged wiring replaced, and job done as promised. Text communication, receiving invoice by email, all made this a positive experience. Thank you for excellent, professional service! I highly recommend ultimate electric for any electrical services!"

"Dana was terrific - he came out promptly when he said he would be here and worked on switching/moving my electrical box with no problems. He cleaned up after himself and I couldn't be more delighted. Another day he changed my electrical outlets inside the house and did just as good a job on them. I'll always use Dana!"

"The response from Top Electrical Systems to my query was fast and I was able to set an appointment quickly. The service was very professional and Tevita Duituturaga explained what he was doing at every step. I had two outdoor light fixtures and 4 smoke alarms installed and the price was very fair. I will use Top Electrical Systems again, and I highly recommend them."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The common, marked as COM or C, is one of the terminals found in your light switch. It houses the live wire that supplies the input voltage. The other terminals, marked as L1 or L2, are the outputs to the light fixtures. Depending on if you have a one-way or two-way switch, you’ll either have just an L1 terminal or both an L1 and L2 terminal.

A circuit breaker flipping off when it detects an overloaded circuit isn’t a problem, but flipping the switch frequently can damage it and eventually cause an electrical hazard. If you’re going on a long vacation or leaving your home for the season, you should avoid turning off your circuit breaker to prevent electrical damage to your system.

Regular inspections, avoiding circuit overloads, and updating wiring when needed help maintain efficiency.

Depending on complexity and materials, costs range from $150 to $500 per fixture.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.
