"Best electric company in Kona! I’m absolutely blown away by the level of professionalism and dedication Ultimate Electric provided me on many of my renovation projects. 100% satisfied with Daniel and his crew. He is always on time every time, consistently fast, easy to deal with and fairly affordable. I highly recommend!"

Small jobs welcome

"It's about two hours after I shared my electrical issue on Angi when I received a call from Jordan West willing to help me out. He was in Hilo side and was about to head out to Kona. So he asked me about my electrical issues and I explained it to him. He asked me to take pictures of my main panel box and the type of breaker. I sent him the pictures and all the informations and he showed up hours later, did some tests, replaced the breaker and BOOM, there was light. Everyone in the house were happy. It only took him two minutes of work to restore back electricity to my home. I am forever grateful for this particular gentleman a job well done. Way to go Jordan West and your company. I will definitely hire him again whenever I encounter electrical issues in the future. Much Mahalo Jordan West."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Your heating and cooling systems cost you the most on your electric bill and make up 50% of your bill on average. Your washing machine, dryer, oven, and stove contribute significantly to your electric bill as well. Lights, fans, and smaller electronics add up, but aren’t the biggest energy consumers. You can reduce your power usage by setting optimal temperatures on your thermostat and investing in energy-efficient appliances.

You will need a permit for any electrical work that involves installing or replacing wiring, moving or installing new fixtures, switches, or outlets, hardwiring appliances or HVAC equipment, installing subpanels, and upgrading electrical service. You typically don’t need a permit to have an electrician replace an existing light fixture or electrical box. You can always call your local building department to see if your project needs a permit, but a professional electrician will be able to tell you. In most cases, your professional will pull the permits for you.

There are several tools available to help prevent electrical fires. First, ensure that you have GFCI outlets installed in necessary areas, along with an AFCI, which is a circuit breaker that can help prevent arc-faults. Investing in surge protectors is also wise, as they can safeguard your appliances and other items against power surges that may overload your outlet and cause sparking.

When power is restored to your home, the transfer switch will return to utility power after about 10 seconds. Your generator will then run for a few more minutes to cool down before automatically shutting itself off. In most situations, your home will stay powered by the generator for at least five minutes, even after your power comes back on.

Before you start doing anything else, you must call your electric company to confirm their process. It is technically their meter that you’re moving, so there’s really no such thing as free rein. Moving the meter generally involves disconnecting power from the utility company, disconnecting the cables that run into your electrical panel, and dismounting the meter assembly. Once uninstalled, a handyperson will remount and reconnect the wiring in its new location.
