"I recently found myself needing to move a grand piano on short notice. Although the movers I'd hired to unload my truck were great at moving everything else, they were concerned when it came time to unload my grand piano. The weather was unbelievably bad at that point with wind and heavy rain and they suggested I contact Hewes Family Movers in Griffin. Bill Hewes, on extremely short notice, worked wonders to fit this move into his schedule. He and his team of four movers arrived at the time they'd promised (the very next morning) and proceeded to carefully and masterfully unload, move and set up a (nearly 100 year old) grand piano - all with the highest level of patience, precision and capability you could hope for. I was wholly impressed with not only how well they moved the piano but also how well they worked together and how respectfully Bill spoke to and directed his employees - to me, that really says a lot about a person. Bill Hewes and his team were unfailingly courteous and exceedingly professional. They did an absolutely awesome job on very short notice and at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend them."

"We had Sam, Bradley, and Mason assist us with a move from one part of King County to the other. They were kind, patient, professional, adhered to CDC COVID-19 guidelines, and made our experience much more pleasant. Moreover, Emma also helped us locate crating and packing materials for the move."

"We had to move our household to two different destinations after the house was sold. Mom moved across town and we had our new home. We contracted both moves with Direct Relocation Services at a very competitive price."

"The movers were amazing! There was great communication throughout the entire process, from booking to moving day to refunding unused time after everything was moved. I moved on a weekday during peak moving season. The guys had been working until very late the night before and were still energetic, attentive, and quick. Because of the loaded moving schedule, there were some issues with the arrival time. I was frequently updated with new information and updated arrival estimates. Once the move was over, I was refunded for unused time in 15 minute increments. This was a great experience and I definitely plan to use MJC in the future."

Moving questions, answered by experts

Moving day for a four-bedroom house can take seven to 10 hours, with an additional four to six full work days to pack everything up. This will depend on how many movers are present, the square footage of your house, how much stuff you have, and any heavy or difficult-to-move items, like a piano or armoire.

The average cost to hire professional movers is approximately $1,700, but the total price can range from as low as $920 to over $12,000 depending on the move's complexity. For local moves, typically under 100 miles, costs generally fall between $920 and $2,530. Long-distance moves are more expensive, with prices ranging from $2,700 to $10,000 or more.

Several key factors influence the final cost:

  • Distance and Home Size: The mileage of the move and the size of your home.

  • Number of Movers: Hourly rates can range from $25 to $50 for one or two movers, increasing to $100 to $200 for a team of four or more.

  • Services: Additional services like packing, unpacking, and storage will add to the cost.

  • Specialty Items: Moving large or delicate items such as pianos, vehicles, or large aquariums incurs extra charges.

  • Timing and Access: The time of year, your specific moving date, and the ease of access to your home can affect rates.

Don’t forget to account for other potential costs like moving supplies and tipping your movers.

Hiring professional movers is usually worth the investment. These moving pros have the expertise and experience to get the job done quickly and safely, saving you time and potentially avoiding damage to your belongings. Professionals are especially a good idea if you’re moving long distances or large, bulky items, like furniture, pianos, or vehicles. Pros will also know when you need moving permits based on where you live and whether or not the moving truck will block traffic.

You can lay a refrigerator down to move it with a lot of padding underneath, but it’s best to transport it upright to keep the cooling refrigerant and compressor oil in place. These elements can cause blockages if not given time to settle before turning the fridge on.

If you need to lay the fridge down to move it, position the fridge door hinges so that doors won’t open while moving.

If you are hiring professional movers, their company will handle any permits and similar arrangements. But if you are renting a truck to move yourself, you may have to pay permits when moving across state lines or away from a specific city or town. Research your move and its requirements as you plan. Most states, cities, and even rental companies offer useful information about what permits you may need.
