I mentioned offhand that now I needed to find someone to fix the pool heater and a pump. I had been unable to find any pool service company that would work on the heater, and everyone just wanted to sell me a new motor and pump. SPM "had a guy" that could do all of that. "Coastal Remodeling screened in my front porch in November 2023. Upon initial inspection, the porch looked good although they did not paint the new trim boards inside the screens, meaning those new boards did not match the rest of the white trim boards on the porch. Unfortunately, one month after installation, one of the screens came loose from the frame leaving a large entrance for mosquitoes. In addition a second screen became very loose a few weeks after installation. Furthermore the screen door they installed is dragging on the porch flooring making it difficult to open and close the screen door. Pretty awkward welcome into my home. I have managed to keep out the mosquitoes with some wide white gorilla tape to match the white frame of the screens, but it does not look “finished”. I have been communicating with Todd for two months about repairing the mistakes even offering to pay him because I am going to put my house on the market in three weeks. Todd promised he would do the work in September. But Todd is no longer responding to me. I will look for a more reliable company next time."

It’s called cobblestone because it’s made of stones that are “cobbed” together. A cob is a term that refers to rounded lumps. Originally, cobblestone streets were made from pebbles and stones gathered from riverbeds that had been rounded over time by the passage of water. The term has nothing to do with a cobbler, which is the term for someone who makes and fixes shoes.

There are many things to look for when buying a brick house. Here are some of the key things you should pay close attention to.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.

Some older brick material is extremely hard, making it tough to create a hole. Rather than using a typical wood drill bit, always use a masonry drill bit when drilling into brick. For extremely hard brick, using a power drill with a hammer function may give you better results. The drill bit will heat up as it goes into the extremely hard brick, so you may need to stop after a few minutes and allow the bit to cool before starting to drill again.

You can turn a red brick white through a process called whitewashing. Whitewash isn’t a stain but rather is made from water and white latex paint. Adding more water to the mix will make the solution look lighter when applied, and adding more paint will make it look more white.
