"Marc and MWT installed 28 windows and a new front door, replaced a wrap around porch and screened in porch and painted the house. Prices were very competitive and there were no unexpected charges at the end of the project. Marc and his team were excellent to work with. They were responsive, timely, and communicated the status and steps of the project. Marc stopped several times to check on the work. The work was high quality and the crews were excellent and did a great job cleaning up each day."

"James is a pro…many years of experience installing doors. I’m a retired picky engineer and handyman. I watched every step of my exterior door with dog door. James fulfilled my expectations and did a really nice job. He’s personable and friendly. I felt that his pricing was very fair. I recommend him. Five stars!!"

"They also replaced our sliding glass door with a french door. The guys were fast and efficient, the door is stunning. The deck was torn down and a new composite deck put up. Tom worked alone and the project turned out absolutely beautiful. Tom was fantastic. On time, efficient and exact. I can't say enough good things about Tom. Thank you."

"I'd give Home Hero 24/7 ten stars if I could. Todd was professional, knowledgable, and smart in his approach to getting my attic door functioning. He has a wonderful demeanor. His scheduler / administrator Melanie has been lovely to speak with as well. The springs of the attic door had been detached and the door did not have enough tension to stay closed. Home Hero 24/7 was one of 4 companies that I had asked about making the repair. Two of the other 3 companies would have gone with the more expensive option of replacing the door without even trying to figure out a way to reattach the springs. The third company would have charged me a significant amount of money to even come out and try. It took Todd under 20 minutes to get from his truck to my door, evaluate the problem, actually fix the problem, and speak with me about the next project I need completed. Home Hero 24/7 will now be my go-to company when I need a handyman."

Doors questions, answered by experts

Many doors can be cut to size, but it depends on the door material. Solid wood doors are relatively easy to trim to a specific size, while hollow core and metal doors are trickier and can usually only be shaved down a little before you risk damaging them. If your door needs a lot of adjustment, it's best to order a custom size or have a pro do the resizing to make sure it holds up over time.

Many doorways feature two door jambs. These are installed on both sides of a doorway to prevent the door from swinging too far. Door jambs usually stop the door at 180 degrees when closed.  A doorway floor transition sits between the door jambs on the floor, helping to create a safer and more aesthetically pleasing transition from one flooring type to the next.

The vast majority of hinges are symmetrical, and either side of the hinge can go on the door or the frame. Occasionally, you'll find a hinge specifically made for right or left-handed doors with different attachment hardware or larger plates on one side. In most cases, the large side of the hinge goes on the frame.

It is possible to install hinges backward, so be careful when placing them. Position the hinge so that the hinge pin faces the direction the door will swing. For example, if you're standing on the side the door will open into, the pin should be visible. Be extra careful when installing exterior doors, as placing the hinges on the outside for an outward-facing door makes your home much easier to break into.

To build a standard size, six-panel door yourself, you’ll need four 2-foot by 6-foot boards, one 2-foot by 8-foot or 2-foot by 10-foot board, and a sheet of 3/4-inch, paint-grade plywood. The 2-foot by 6-foot boards will serve as your stiles, top rail, and horizontal and vertical mullions, and the wider board will serve as the bottom rail, which is usually wider than the other horizontal pieces. The plywood will serve as the panels, but you’ll need around five 1-foot by 6-foot boards to make your own panels if you want to stain the door rather than paint it.

You might assume that having two locks on one door will offer more protection than only one lock, but there may not be an advantage. While there’s nothing wrong with having two locks if you feel it’s best for your living situation, rest assured having one high-quality deadbolt installed correctly will offer a high level of protection.
