"Sump pumps are not sexy... neither are French drains.  But they're necessary in Atlanta and we cannot recommend Robert Duffy and his team enough.  Our basement and crawl space are now dry and secure and our 85 year old house will be around for another 85 years!"

"LG Improvement has been my go-to flooring contractor for almost a decade. Their work is excellent and prices are very good. Luis, the owner, always responds incredibly fast, and, in the rare occasion of an issue or concern, he has immediately corrected the problem. I’ve been in the real estate business for 17 years and have come across more unreliable contractors than reliable ones, but Luis & LG Home Improvement have stood apart as one of the best and I will continue to rely on him for my flooring and granite countertop needs!"

Garages questions, answered by experts

It’s possible to use a torch to melt ice on your garage door, but we don’t recommend it. It’s very easy to bring the flame too close to the door, which can melt the weather stripping or even the garage door itself. You’ll melt ice quickly with a torch, but the damage you’re likely to cause can end up costing you a few hundred dollars to fix, which isn’t worth it. Instead, we recommend pouring hot water over the frozen area or using a less intense heat source, like a hair dryer or space heater.

A garage door panel is a section of the garage door that spans the width of the door and connects to other panels above and/or below to create a folding door. The panels usually each have rollers on the sides that fit into the tracks and direct the sectioned door to open and close while remaining in balance.

The best way to maintain a garage door and avoid issues is to hire someone to do a garage door tune-up, check the remote opener, and service the main system components, like the springs, chains, and track. Schedule maintenance service once every two years for $100 to $200. You can also DIY garage door maintenance, like washing and waxing the door and applying lubricant to hinges and rollers regularly.

Garages are often equipped with lighting, electrical boxes, and sometimes even heating and cooling, while carports rarely have utilities. A garage is an enclosed structure that can lock and usually has an automatic door. A carport is often wood or plastic and is designed only to protect a car from elements like rain, snow, and hail. Carports are commonly seen on property where an attached garage is unfeasible but can be a cost-effective solution for car protection for anyone without a completed garage.

Garage doors are heavy and close under power, so ensuring they're safe should be one of the priorities of a homeowner. Installing at least one sensor is a good start, but it doesn't hurt to have two, especially considering you can install a secondary system for less than $100. Remember that sensors require calibration and simple but regular maintenance checks— installing them is only the first step.
