If you want to convert a tub to a walk-in shower, expect this project to take anywhere from one to three days. It takes less time to remove a standard tub and install a standard-sized prefabricated shower. Your project will take longer if you’re installing new plumbing and tiling. Certain custom tiling designs can take three or four days if they’re elaborate.

All bathtub materials have advantages and disadvantages. Cast iron is the most durable option, but these heavy tubs are expensive and not always suitable for bathtubs on upper floors. Acrylic is a good option for those on a budget. However, copper has many unique benefits if you want something that wows and requires minimal maintenance.

Installing a clawfoot tub with a minimum of 6 inches of clearance from surrounding walls allows ample room for the faucet and pipework, makes cleaning easier, and reduces the chance of moisture being trapped between the tub and the walls. It might need to be closer if the faucet comes directly out of the wall.

How much room you need for a roll-in shower depends on your goals and the specifications of your shower. Most roll-in showers require at least 60-by-30 inches of space, and at least 60-by-60 inches is best for comfort and maneuverability. When planning the size of your roll-in shower, consider your needs for comfort and additional installations, such as benches and grab bars, that can make the space tighter.

Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. You can apply new tile over existing tile in a bathroom, but the new tile may not look great if you lay it over worn, cracked, or uneven tiles. The adhesive may not be able to attach the new tile to the old tile properly, and this will add more weight to the drywall.

It takes more time and effort, but removing existing tiles before retiling a bathroom is worth it.
