"Burtons crew took a lot of time with the edges around my cabinets. His guys washed down the doors and all of the molding before painting (as I had requested and paid extra) so that cabinets, trim, & walls were very clean from exposure to grease before the paintwork. There was no overspray and he put on two coats just like I requested! I was so pleased with the outcome! It was so nice to get a fresh kitchen makeover for a Mom of 3 grown boys! Thanks, Burton and everyone at Quality Color Painting! I am a happy customer for sure! - Elizabeth Truesdel Perry, GA"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Yes, it is possible to add an under-deck drainage system to an existing deck by retrofitting it to the structure. This process may require some prep work. For example, many drainage systems are installed on top of the deck joists, which would require you to remove the decking boards and railings first. To avoid this, you could opt for a below-the-joist drainage system. For best results and to ensure proper installation, it is recommended to consult a professional. A pro can inspect your deck, make any necessary repairs, and then install the drainage system correctly.

Rotting wood, loose railings, or unstable stairs may indicate a need for expertise.

Staining and sealing the underside of a deck creates a moisture barrier but traps water in the boards, quickly leading to rot. No matter how well you seal the above deck, water still gets through via nails and screw heads on the surface. Allow this water to flow naturally under the deck, where it is routed through the drainage system.

Most building codes list a minimum width of 36 inches and a maximum height of 7¾ inches. However, for the most comfort and spaciousness, you’ll want to aim for a width of at least 48 inches and a height of 7 inches. Again, it’s always a good idea to base your numbers off steps that you already use comfortably.

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.
