"Burtons crew took a lot of time with the edges around my cabinets. His guys washed down the doors and all of the molding before painting (as I had requested and paid extra) so that cabinets, trim, & walls were very clean from exposure to grease before the paintwork. There was no overspray and he put on two coats just like I requested! I was so pleased with the outcome! It was so nice to get a fresh kitchen makeover for a Mom of 3 grown boys! Thanks, Burton and everyone at Quality Color Painting! I am a happy customer for sure! - Elizabeth Truesdel Perry, GA"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

Yes, you can build a deck around a fire pit, as long as it is safely enclosed, meets code requirements, and is at least 15 feet away from your home. You’ll want to ensure you have a heat-resistant barrier between the fire pit and your deck to prevent any structural damage and fires. A galvanized ring surrounded by pavers, brick, or stone makes for a beautiful, safe, and sturdy design.

The best paver for your pool deck depends on your budget, style, and how much maintenance you’re willing to invest. Granite is one of the best low-cost pavers for pool decks. It’s very slip-resistant and durable, too, making it a top pick. Travertine is a high-quality material that resists freeze-thaw cycles, looks stunning, and won’t get hot in the summer. The only downside to travertine is that it costs more than granite.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.
