"Sean C, Evan S, Justin D, and Darian W just completed a walk in shower replacement. They were respectful, courteous, friendly, and professional. They first removed a tub and ceramic tile. Then installed the walk-in shower. No dust or dirt was left behind. Their meticulous work ethic was much appreciated. I will definitely recommend West Shore to anyone looking to upgrade their shower. Thumbs up to this company and especially the installers named above!"

"Todd Phillips did an amazing renovation of our 1950s rural family home built by my father who is now deceased. He would have been very happy with their work and the improvements that were made, and the reuse of some of the 100+ year old wood. My father actually recycled it from an old farmhouse that had once stood on the property. It is now a rustic backsplash in our new kitchen. Mr. Phillips was the only builder who responded to my request for a renovation estimate when our mother died several years ago. He came out and gave us a very fair price, but he knew then [he said] that it might be sometime before the job started. And it was. Years later I called him, and he remembered that time; we met and came to an agreement for the renovation of what was to become our retirement home. He is honest, communicates, offers professional and experienced advice, manages his subcontractors, and charges a fair price for the work. We have not had any problems with any of the work: Kitchen/Dining, 2 bathrooms (three-piece & four-piece both w/glass showers), bedroom, laundry/utility room renovations; new hardwood floors, floor tile, new windows and doors, plumbing & electrical, new walls, ceilings, interior painting and finishing throughout. We highly recommend Todd Phillips and hope that we will be able to get on his schedule for additional building projects."

"I was given an estimate over the phone and purchase the replacement faucet to be installed on the kitchen sink. When the workman arrived, he explained that I had purchased the wrong faucet--not enough pieces. Without making me feel stupid, he put the sink back together and even made an adjustment so that it worked better. I made the exchange, called Improve America, and they were back to complete the work two days later. There was no additional charge for the return visit and I couldn't be happier with the work performed."

"These guys are great! Highly recommend this company. The tile technician was on time, thorough and just so easy to work with. He understood our needs and did a great job with color sealing the tub and floor tile. We had one small issue and within a day of a call to the company, the owner was here to fix the small issue."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

How long painted tiles last ultimately comes down to the quality of the paint job and how much wear and tear the tiles get. It’s possible the paint job will only last about six months if the tiles are in a high-traffic area and they weren’t properly cleaned, sanded, and primed prior to painting and sealing. Well-painted tiles in a low-traffic area should last at least a year.

The best bathroom floor tiles are strong enough to withstand the weight of a clawfoot tub. However, professional tile installation is essential. If the tiles are uneven or improperly fixed, they may crack under the pressure. Be careful when installing the tub—if it drops or drags on the tiles, it could easily cause scratches or cracks.

There are a few different tools you can use to score tiles. Manual tile cutters or tile scribes work well for scoring in straight lines. Tile nippers are one of the best options for scoring because they can make small and irregular cuts that larger tools may not be able to handle.

Yes. You can tile over tile if the old tile is in good shape, but this will also create a thicker floor. As a result, you may have to remove and readjust baseboards and other room trimmings and potentially even raise door heights to work with the higher floors. In most projects, it’s best to remove the old tile before installing a new tile floor.

No, when done correctly, removing the tile shouldn’t damage the subfloor. However, if there was pre-existing damage to the subfloor from standard use or lack of maintenance, the subfloor may need repairs. For example, if the contractors notice mold growth on the subfloor or an uneven surface, you may need more extensive services before installing new tile.

If you DIY tile removal, remove the tiles one step at a time, individually removing the tile, grout, and mortar to prevent unnecessarily damaging the subfloor. Depending on the age of your home, consider having a professional inspect the subfloor to ensure it’s in good enough condition to lay new tile.
