"Not an emergency, but I was in a pickle. Melissa was quick to respond to my request. Rather than take advantage of me, she jumped into action to see if she could make things happen. Within 15 minutes I had a price-range and an arrival within a few hours. I do have to knock off .5 stars as the switch and cover plate that were installed against my pure white backsplash are off-white. Beggars can’t be choosers though and maybe that’s all he had on the truck."

"I had an electric panel upgraded in my house. I had the service increased to 200AMP and arc-fault breakers installed. The house's panel was 42 years old and out dated. In addition, the TE Team got my house up to code with new smoke alarms and CO2 detectors. Wilson and Jason were my technicians and they did an outstanding job on upgrade. There were several issues to resolve in my older house. They kept me informed on what was going on and why things had to be done a certain way. I highly recommend TE Certified for any electrical work."

"Lightning Bug Electric did a wonderful job. We had Josh & Jake come out to install a ceiling fan & a new switch for it in our two story living room. They were extremely nice, funny & professional. They taught us a lot about the home’s existing wiring, & recommendations to upgrade our house that were extremely helpful. The ceiling fan came out great, & the switch as well! I highly recommend them to anyone looking to get electrical work done the right way. Incredible!!"

"We chose Lightning Bug Electric to install a backup generator for our house because Lightning Bug had handled some electrical work for us in the past, and we liked their service. Sean and Dustin installed our generator and we could not be more pleased with our experience. They were totally accommodating to our needs and schedules, installed the generator and completed their work with a minimum of disruption to us. They answered all of our questions and were extremely knowledgeable. When we had a minor glitch with our water heater, Sean made sure that we were taken care of promptly on a Saturday morning! We look forward to continuing our relationship with Lightning Bug-- they are definitely our go-to guys!"

"Came in, got straight to work. Lights looked amazing. Only problem was they wouldn’t patch 2 small holes from removing old fixture. I took care of it no problem but it would be common courtesy to take care of that for your customer. Other than that, honestly the guys were extremely professional. He wanted to make sure my lights lined up with existing fixtures so in an event I ever changed it, it could match and looked uniformed to the ones installed. I’d definitely use them again for sure."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

Generators run on a variety of fuel types, ranging from natural gas to solar power. Keep in mind that fuel costs varying by type:

  • Natural gas: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Liquid propane: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Diesel: $3,000–$20,000 per year

  • Gasoline: $500–$3,000 per year

  • Solar generator: $2,000–$25,000 per unit

  • Battery backup: $10,000–$25,000 per unit

Yes, in most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home models. Because these installations involve significant alterations to your home's electrical system and produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require a permit or inspection for safety purposes. A generator permit typically costs between $50 and $250, depending on your location. Your electrician or certified installer can usually handle the permitting process for you, but you will be responsible for the cost. It's a good practice to confirm with your installer that they will pull all necessary permits before work begins.
