"Southern Rust Woodworks has the best custom built products around. I have several pieces he has made for me, and I get asked all the time who did them and how to contact him. He can make anything you want! Or if you donâ t have an idea, he has great ideas himself. My house is basically a Southern Rust Woodworks showcase. Love all my pieces and they are excellent quality. Love all his products!!!"

"THE OWNER IS FROM ITALY, YOU CAN TELL FROM HIS WORK THAT HE DOES EVERYTHING BY HAND, IN THE "OLD SCHOOL STYLE." WE HAD AN APPRAISER WATCH HIM WORK; THE APPRAISER SAID HE'D NEVER SEEN ANYONE AS METICULOUS. THE APPRAISER ALSO SAID, "DON'T RUSH HIS WORK, HE DOES A FANTASTIC JOB." HE TOOK IT DOWN TO THE BARE WOOD, AND STARTED OVER TO BRING IT BACK. A WONDERFUL JOB. IT WAS A LARGE SET, 10 PIECES PLUS 5 LEAVES FOR THE TABLE, ALL OVER 100 YEARS OLD. IT HAD A GLASS CABINET. HE RE-CANED ALL OF OUR CHAIRS. THE TABLE LEAVES CAME IN A CASE, WHICH HE REFINISHED ALSO. I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT TO BE DONE, BUT I WAS EXTREMELY PLEASED."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

Begin by analyzing the blueprints and gathering the proper materials before framing a house. With the prep stages behind you, begin by framing the floor of a house on the newly set foundation. Exterior and interior walls come next, along with rough openings for doors and windows. Contractors will then add ceiling and roof rafters to finish things off.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.
