"The whole process from inquiry to scheduling through performing the service was performed professionally and amicably. We had just acquired our condo in Channelside. As a result of the home inspection, the breaker panel was found to be serviceable, however, several wires were double tapped. Mike T. who arrived promptly as scheduled quickly assessed the problem and made an instant recommendation to correct on the spot. Additionally, Mike conducted a thorough inspect of condo’s electrical system. He was thorough in his assessments and clearly demonstrated a command of his craft. Moreover, he was extremely personable and exuberated trustworthiness. I would definitely recommend this outstanding firm for all your electrical needs."

"Highly Recommend Shock Doc Electric! We recently had our entire electrical panel replaced by Shock Doc Electric, and the experience was nothing short of outstanding. From start to finish, Matt was prompt, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. He took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all of our questions, and made sure we understood exactly what was being done and why. Matt arrived right on time, worked efficiently, and left everything spotless. The quality of workmanship was top-notch, and you can tell he take real pride in his work. Our new panel looks great, functions perfectly, and gives us so much more confidence in the safety and reliability of our home’s electrical system. It’s rare to find a company this honest, skilled, and respectful of your time and property. "Perfect. Andre Williams (owner) answered the initial call promptly, provided an over-the-phone quote in the work I needed done, promptly scheduled the install, arrived and took his time to do everything top-notch, educated me on proper service, maintenance and operation of e equipment, tested everything and finished the job by spotlessly cleaning up the work space and then provided the invoice with no surprises (even though the install took two days instead of one.) I would HIGHLY recommend I & C Contracting Services for all your electrical needs."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

You should never plug a normal 120v appliance into a special 240v outlet, as it can quickly burn out the appliance. This will cause irreparable damage to the appliance and, in worse case scenarios, cause damage to your circuit breaker. Check your appliance’s rating before plugging it into a 220v outlet to avoid electrical disaster.

A C-wire connects your thermostat to your household heating and cooling system to provide continuous 24V power. The furnace's transformer converts household electrical current into this low-voltage power to operate the HVAC system's circuitry. In most configurations, the C-wire connects to the terminals labeled "C" on both the furnace's low-voltage terminal block and the thermostat. In some cases, if a dedicated C terminal is unavailable, the C-wire can be connected to the "G" (fan) terminal at the furnace.

Most standard residential water heaters, which are typically around 40 gallons and use 240 volts and between 3,500 and 5,500 watts, require a 30-amp, two-pole circuit breaker. For smaller, point-of-use water heaters using 120 volts and between 1,500 and 3,000 watts, a 30-amp breaker is also often adequate. However, some models may have different needs; units that use more watts than average may require a 40-amp breaker, while smaller units might only need a 20-amp breaker. Newer, tankless, or more energy-efficient models can also require a higher amperage. Having the correct breaker size is crucial for safe and efficient operation, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to determine the specific needs of your water heater.

If there’s already a suitable outlet near the range, you likely won’t need an electrician to install an over-the-range microwave. However, if there isn’t an existing outlet or the current one doesn’t meet the microwave’s power needs, you’ll probably need an electrician to install a new outlet.

Services by electricians can quickly get expensive, but there are a few ways you can save money in the process:

  • Bundle multiple jobs done at the same time to save on trip fees or flat fees for individual projects.

  • Get at least three quotes for service to find the best deal.

  • Buy fixtures, switches, outlets, and other materials beforehand to avoid product markup.

  • If you feel comfortable with it, have an apprentice or journeyman complete the work under the supervision of a master electrician. These electricians in training tend to charge less per project.
