"My only concern is: I had an additional AC vent added. The used what I considered a way to large of an outlet for the size the room. There is very very little air coming from the vent. The used a 5 inch duct, and air should come pouring out the vent. The 4 inch bathroom vents blow like crazy. The room is still warmer that I would like because of the lack of air. For the money i spent for the duct, I really feel I didn't get what I paid for. I may have another company come in to see what can be done to fix it. I have not been up in my attic to see the final re-insulate job. I went to an R-38 upgrade and I can am relying on them to have done a proper job. So far, I haven't noticed any difference in the run time of my AC. I was hoping that the added insulation would keep the AC from running as often as it does."

"Two friendly guys Vince and Bob came out early morning and helped me out with my HVAC unit repair. The fan wasn't spinning and a loud buzzing noise was coming from the unit. They quickly identified the problem and replaced my capacitors and my fan motor. Getting the replacement was quicker than expected, and installation when smooth as can be. Our AC is working fine again! I highly recommend MekTek to take care of your AC repair needs."

Air Conditioning FAQs, answered by experts

If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances.

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

Split systems are the most common type of HVAC system. Split systems have two main units: an indoor one and an outdoor one. These units work together to pull in air, heat or cool it, and distribute it throughout your home. Other popular types of HVAC systems include hybrid systems and packaged heating and air systems.

Ideally, an AC system should never need more Freon (a popular refrigerant) because it circulates in a closed loop. However, refrigerant leaks are not uncommon and may occur gradually over 5 to 15 years. If your system has a leak, it will need to be topped up in a process known as an AC recharge. Signs of a refrigerant leak include weakened AC performance, increased humidity in your home, higher utility bills, and a hissing sound from the unit. The cost of an AC recharge will depend on the size and type of your AC unit, as well as the type of refrigerant it uses.

Air conditioners and dehumidifiers are actually quite similar, though they perform different jobs. Dehumidifiers reduce moisture in the air, while air conditioners work to cool the home. A good central AC unit will naturally perform a certain level of dehumidification due to its design, but it will not be able to handle excessive levels of moisture.

Yes, a mini split AC system can replace central air—and quite easily, too. Since mini splits don’t require ductwork, homeowners can convert their central air system to a mini split to save money and energy. Consult with an HVAC professional to learn more about the process of replacing your central air with a mini split.
