"Promised removal of old ceiling fans. Only complied after being threatened with payment withdrawal. Thought they were a bit overpriced. Would not use again."

"This was my best experience with an electrical service while living at On Top Of The World. The response time was outstanding, the quote process was simple and free, and their rates were very reasonable. The technicians were knowledgeable, professional, resourceful, efficient, respectful, and tidy. While on site installing 2 ceiling fans and junction box, they even found a way to save me money compared to the original quote and to avoid drywall patching and wire molding. I’ll definitely rely on them for all my future electrical needs."

"Electrician was very nice and explained the problem thoroughly. He got my ceiling fan working again, but also advised me of future problems because the fan wasnâ t installed totally correctly by the contractor that did my redecorating. He gave me a quote to re-install a fan the proper way."

"Frank went out and bought a new light fixture based on my assumption of the problem, but the problem turned out to be in the switch! I take half the responsibility for that, but wish he (as the professional) would've diagnosed the problem himself; afterwards, I realized he didn't clean up after himself. so, the job got done and he was responsive, but all-in-all a very mediocre and disappointing experience."

"Fantastic! I’ve used this company many times for A/C repair and maintenance and have always been pleased with their work. This was my first time having them do electrical work and am very happy with the results. Office staff were very pleasant when scheduling the appointment and I received an email reminder the day before as well as an email when the technician was en route. Pete, the electrician who did the work, was terrific. He arrived when expected, got right to work, and knew his stuff. He was very neat and took pains to make sure that the new box for the ceiling fan was properly centered in the kitchen. He also relocated the garbage disposal switch to a more convenient spot in the cabinet under the sink and changed which outlet in a bedroom was controlled by a wall switch. All this, including cleanup, was completed in just under three hours. I would definitely use this company again for electrical work as well as A/C service."

"Total Home was my choice over 4 other quality roofers and I have no regrets. Their salesman, AJ, was great. He took us through the whole process and treated us like a family member. The crew that performed the work was outstanding. They were courteous, hard working, and cleaned up every day. We had some slight warranty work because it rained every day during the installation; Total Home responded immediately, performed small repairs to our family room ceiling and matched the ceiling finish perfectly. I recommend Total Home to all my neighbors and friends."

"We discussed all the things we needed and Mel provided useful information. We had a number of things done, including installing microwave, ceiling fan, ceiling and exterior fixtures, exhaust fans and shower lights in two baths, outdoor outlet, and new updated service panel. My favorite is the new backyard power outlet. I use it all the time for various projects. Mel did outstanding work and we would not hesitate to hire him again and recommend him to others."

"Kris took the time to put up my pendant light fixture exactly as I wanted it. Very friendly and you can really tell he takes pride in his craftsmanship and business. He stated that he does things the way that he would want it to look in his home and he proved that at this appointment. The adjustable lines for the pendants were a headache to get exactly as I wanted, but he worked hard to get them just right. I am very happy with my light install and will definitely be hiring him again. Don't sleep on this guy, he's really good!"

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

To determine if your ceiling box can support a fan, you must check if it is specifically fan-rated. Manufacturers are required to indicate this on the box itself. You may need to remove the existing light fixture to look inside the ceiling box for an inscription stating it is rated for fan use. If you do not see this confirmation, the box is likely not strong enough and must be replaced with a fan-rated junction box. For a proper and safe installation, you should also use a fan brace to secure the new box between the ceiling joists, which provides the necessary support for the fan's weight and motion.

There are several telltale signs to let you know that your ceiling fan needs servicing or replacement. For instance, if it’s wobbling, rotating too slowly, or if your ceiling fan is making noise such as squeaks, buzzes, and thumps, it’s time to have it looked at by a professional. Not only may it indicate a potential problem with the fan itself, but it could also signal a red flag that it’s improperly assembled or there’s an issue with the wiring.

Fan power is measured by CFM, or cubic feet per minute. For every 1,000 feet of square footage in your attic, you need a minimum of 700 CFM. Steeper roofs may need larger fans or about 840 CFM.  You can figure the size of attic fan you need by multiplying the square footage of your attic floor by 0.7. (multiply by 1.2 for a steep roof and 1.15 for a dark roof). That number is the CFM required for your fan to run efficiently.

There’s no reason why you can’t install a ceiling fan anywhere in your home, such as in living rooms, offices, bedrooms, and dining areas. Most bathrooms already have ventilation and don’t need a ceiling fan. For safety purposes, avoid installing a ceiling fan where the blades will be less than eight feet from the floor, near bunk beds, or anywhere else they may hit nearby objects.

Hiring an electrician to install a new ceiling fan may be the best course of action. Installing a ceiling fan requires basic electrical and mechanical knowledge. It also requires holding it up with one hand and in an awkward position, making the installation even more difficult. If you’re uncomfortable with these circumstances, your best bet is to hire a professional.
