"The work is not yet complete, permitting process has just started. All of my contacts with the company so far have been very positive. Sales and customer service are handled in a highly professional manner. The final permits and certificates have been completed and closed. All of the people I dealt with at Reliable Power Systems were polite and professional, keeping me up to date on project status. A word of advice to homeowners considering installing a home generator, be prepared to wait for your city to approve permits and complete inspections. These were the items that took the most time, and over which you and company have no control. It is also best to choose a company, like Reliable Power Systems, that handles 100% of the work. I highly recommend this company."

"Outstanding Service from Levin Electric! I recently hired Levin Electric for some electrical work in my apartment, and I am thoroughly impressed by the quality of their service. From the moment I reached out, their team was professional, responsive, and incredibly efficient. The electrician who came to my apartment was knowledgeable, courteous, and took the time to explain everything they were doing in a clear and concise manner. They worked quickly while ensuring that the job was done to the highest standard, and they even cleaned up afterward, which I really appreciated. I had several electrical issues that were resolved with precision, and I now feel confident that my home is safe and up to code. Levin Electric truly exceeded my expectations in every way, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for reliable and skilled electrical services. Thank you, Levin Electric,"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

If you’re wondering if you can use your electric vehicle as a backup battery, it depends on whether your EV is compatible with bidirectional charging. This technology allows energy to flow both ways, enabling vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup power, vehicle-to-load (V2L) for appliances and camping, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) to support the power grid. Compatible EVs convert stored DC energy into usable AC power, helping reduce energy costs and enhance grid stability while providing emergency backup power.

Homeowners can often access federal tax credits, such as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which covers a percentage of installation costs. Many states and utilities offer additional rebates, grants, or performance-based incentives. These programs can significantly lower your upfront investment. Check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) or contact your local energy office for current offers.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.

In many cases, yes. There are models called dual-fuel generators and fuel switches, but only between certain types of fuel. For example, with the right setup you can convert a generator from natural gas to propane. Some allow switching between diesel and gasoline. There are even tri-fuel generators available in some cases, which adds a large layer of security if you are worried about fuel availability in times of crisis. Always check your generator capabilities and manual instructions before trying to switch fuels. Some generators can use another fuel but may need a fuel conversion kit to prep them first.
