"Ted was referred to me by a friend in the neighborhood who was very pleased with his work. When we met he gave me a sense of confidence and I could tell from our conversation he was trustworthy. I was uncertain about the paint color. He showed several options from the paint chips he had with him. Because I was somewhat hesitant to make the decision, he left the paint chip palette with me so I could take some time to make a final decision. We made the final decision, but I was going out of town for a 2-week vacation which would delay the start time. He suggested that they could do the painting while we were gone and explained that he would take down all of the draperies, move the furniture, and have it all placed back exactly as we had it when we came back. My husband was also confident that he was trustworthy, so we hired him. He did exactly as he said he said he would. The house was perfectly in order and the paint was beautifully done. Ted and his crew are simply exceptional."

"Had an excellent experience with this guy. The wood flooring came out beautifully with extreme care and craftsmanship. On top of that, the conversations were great and the dedication to getting everything right was obvious from start to finish. He took pride in his work and didn’t rush anything, which made a big difference in the final result. Highly recommend if you want quality work done by someone who truly cares about what they do."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining a deck is typically less expensive upfront than painting. The cost to stain a deck professionally averages around $850, with most homeowners paying between $550 and $1,250, depending on the deck's size. A DIY staining project can cost less than $100. The cost to paint a deck ranges from $500 to $2,000. While the initial cost of staining is lower, it's important to consider long-term expenses. Paint can last up to 10 years, whereas stain needs to be reapplied every few years, which could lead to higher costs over time.

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.

You’ll need to restrain your deck when you notice fading, cracking, peeling, or mold and mildew over a moderate to large area, or when it’s become especially difficult to clean. As for how often to stain a deck, plan to do it every two to three years or whenever you start to notice extended damage.

There’s no single paint that’s the most waterproof. Instead, there are several types of waterproof and water-resistant paints that suit different purposes. Epoxy paint, for instance, is commonly used to provide a waterproof coating to floors and decks. Masonry paint is an excellent choice for exterior walls. Meanwhile, there are waterproof acrylic paints that can be used for interior and exterior walls. It’s more about choosing the best type for what you’re painting instead of the most waterproof paint overall.

Essential tools include brushes or rollers, drop cloths, sandpaper or power sanders, and appropriate cleaning supplies. Quality materials ensure long-lasting results.
