"UNBELIEVABLE! I told them I needed a fence up ASAP as I have plans for a couple of weddings in my backyard (Including my own). Every other quote I had gotten was at least 3-$4k more as well as minimum 8 weeks before being able to start. MGS came to give me a quote and less than five days later my fence was done. The fence was up in 4 hours, 275’ w/ 4 gates! Communication was excellent, every question or concern was addressed directly, they were very friendly and professional. I highly recommend Magnum GOD Services."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

When considering how much of a gap should be under a fence or gate, a good rule of thumb is to keep gaps between 2 and 5 inches tall. This allows for some ground clearance for the gate but still provides safety for children and pets, who shouldn’t be able to squeeze through a gap of that size.

In most cases, you will need a building permit to put up a vinyl fence, especially if the fence is sitting on or close to your property line. You can ask your local building department or  fence installation company if your fence project will require a permit. If so, you can expect it to cost between $20 and $60. Your fence installer should pull the permit for you. Building without a permit could eventually require you to pay again to remove the fence and reinstall it after getting the job approved.

Rust, bent panels, loose posts, and broken welds often require repair.

There are many types of wood fencing that you can choose from. For split rail fencing, the most common wood types are cedar, pine, black locust, and chestnut. The best wood for you will depend on if you like the way a certain wood looks and the availability of the wood type in your area.

Most of the wood types you can find at your local home improvement store are good choices since they all have rot-resistant properties or are pressure-treated with pesticides. If none of the wood options speak to the look you’re going for, check out vinyl fencing.

A chain link fence typically lasts between 15 and 20 years, but with proper maintenance, it can last for 30 years or more. To preserve the fence, it's important to keep the mesh wire tight, which can be done with a come-along tool every 6 to 12 months. Investing in a fence with a galvanized, powder-coated, or vinyl-coated finish can increase its lifespan to 20 to 30 years and reduce maintenance needs, as these coatings provide extra protection against the elements.
