"He has a good price. I shopped around. This is the second or third year he has done it. I do it every 6 months. I do it at the beginning of the hurricane season and at the end of the hurricane season. The workers were good, no problem. They did replace the generator so they put in a new generator too so they have basically done everything with the generator for the house."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

After severe weather in Punta Gorda, safely inspect your unit by clearing away surrounding debris and standing water without touching any electrical components. You must also trim back fast-growing tropical vegetation to maintain proper clearance zones. If the unit runs without supplying power, try resetting the external circuit breaker. Rely on licensed professionals for all internal generator installation wiring, transfer switch repairs, and fuel line adjustments.

Helpful?

The transfer switch requires the most frequent attention, as Florida humidity and salt air cause contacts to oxidize rapidly. Exterior conduit runs and weatherhead fittings also degrade from UV exposure and coastal winds. Additionally, high water tables in Punta Gorda cause ground movement that shifts concrete generator pads over time. This shifting puts severe stress on your fuel lines, meaning these connections require regular generator installation repairs to remain safe.

Helpful?

Visible corrosion or scorch marks on your transfer switch indicate severe contact degradation that requires immediate replacement. If your concrete base appears cracked or tilted, the anchorage system has failed against Punta Gorda soil movement. Brittle or cracked exterior conduit also signals that your previous generator installation fails to meet current weatherproofing standards. Finally, an unpermitted system lacking a flexible gas connector poses a serious safety hazard.

Helpful?

Always secure the required local permits before beginning a generator installation project to avoid stop-work orders. You must hire licensed professionals for all electrical and gas connections. Check your neighborhood zoning and HOA rules for specific setback distances. Since Punta Gorda experiences severe storms, confirm that your contractor engineers the concrete pad and anchoring system to withstand high wind loads required by current FL building codes.

Helpful?

Neglecting to rinse exterior components after coastal storms accelerates salt air corrosion, which shortens the lifespan of generator installation work. Allowing debris to sit against the concrete pad traps moisture and damages the base. You should also avoid planting fast-growing tropical vegetation too close to the unit, as this blocks necessary ventilation. Finally, skipping your annual load test allows transfer switch contacts to oxidize faster in the humid Punta Gorda climate.
