Customers say: Quick response

"I had 2 pieces of antique furniture; one was upholstered, it is 75+ years old, a Slipper Chair. The other is much, much older. It is a straight back chair with a Crewel piece covering the seat. It needed some TLC. It was uncomfortable to sit for very long and straw was coming out of the bottom. He did an outstanding job on both I could not be more pleased with the work that was done. At the beginning he told me the cost and that it would take 2-3 weeks; and both were absolutely true. He is honest, ethical and I would use him again!!"

"We have received excellent customer satisfaction from the several projects (for wood, painting and wrought iron) done for us by Twin Wood Artisans Stain & Shine. While their workmanship has been top notch, the customer relationship has been wonderful, too. For example, they are good listeners, keep their appointments, call if they are delayed in traffic, and even drop off touch-up paint to remedy any future needs. We have found in them, 5-Star Quality work performed by very nice people. Looking forward to our next project. THANK YOU, Steve, Cindy and Mike?Twin Wood Artisans Stain & Shine. Upholstering questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can reupholster antique furniture, and it’s a great way to extend the life of your pieces and keep them looking fresh and new for years to come. In fact, since reupholstering furniture is significantly more affordable than replacing it, reviving antique furniture can be a cost-effective way to keep that family heirloom usable for much longer. It’s usually a good idea to leave antique reupholstering to a professional, as they will have the tools and expertise to ensure the piece isn’t damaged and looks professionally finished.

The average cost to reupholster a piece of furniture is around $720, with most projects falling in the $380 to $1,150 range. The final price can vary significantly based on several factors. These include the size and complexity of the furniture, the cost of the new fabric (which typically ranges from $50 to $70 per yard), and hourly labor rates (often $40 to $100 per hour). Additional factors that influence the price are the piece's current condition, its age, whether it needs other repairs, the number of pieces being reupholstered, and your geographic location.

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done

Consider durability, color, texture, room use, and personal style when selecting fabric. Fabrics like linen, cotton, or microfiber offer versatility and strength.

To safeguard your furniture and upholstered items, it's best to use plastic wrap or specially-made plastic sofa covers. However, you should avoid wrapping wooden furniture in plastic if you plan on storing it, as plastic can trap moisture and warp the wood, plus it may damage certain finishes. In either case, old blankets or moving blankets make excellent alternatives. For protecting delicate glass table tops and mirrors, bubble wrap is always a reliable choice.
