"Hired the company for stucco repair work around all the sides of the house. This is an investment property and as such, i was unable to be at the home. Great communication was extreamly useful as I was kept updated with the progress of the work via daily pictures. The work started on time and and I was informed on each issue that came up for review and authorization. On schedule, quality work and as per agreed in advance. Recommended"

"Brandon did an excellent job. He even did some extras that were not included in his price quote. He fixed the hole in the wall, replaced one of the ceiling fans globe, replaced broken chains on another fan, fixed a curtain rod bracket and put some of my panels that came off the wooden panels back up on my privacy fence. He picked up everything and left no messes. He was very friendly and polite. I highly recommend him and will use him again should I have any drywall issues"

"Win!! Lou is wonderful. Needed repair on a tray ceiling. Looks fantastic! Also had him inspect another area that might be an issue. He didn’t try to scare me into another job that didn’t need fixed at this time. He prepared and cleaned up like he was never here. I highly recommend! Five star!!!!!"

"Johnny@ Alpha was professional and provided me with a detailed estimate of the work to be done. He also provided me with three options of work that can be done to fix my driveway/sidewalk problems. We were able to schedule repairs quickly for the home. I was very pleased with the work done and will use it on future projects."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Regular inspection for issues like cracks or leaning and ensuring drainage stays clear.

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

With foundation walls, the slab on grade and force at the top of the wall is resisted by flooring. With retaining walls, the force at the top of the wall is not resisted.
