"Forrest is a professional all the way. I would trust and hire him for any job he can do, and maybe some he cannot. Honestly decent from the heart and concerned about his clients. He took time to guide me through a hands-on start-up of the generator he installed. Forrest made sure to clean the area he worked in and was extremely polite."

"We had recessed lighting (4) installed in our master bedroom. A little more expensive than other quotes, but they provide you the information before you hire them, so it wasn't a surprise. Great quality and customer service. We had purchased the housing and the lighting prior to their arrival. Once we agreed to hire them and the technician looked at our hardware, he mentioned that he could use what we had purchased, but there was a different type of housing that could be used and it would cut the installation time and cost if used. He continued to work while I returned and exchanged the housing. Excellent recommendation and greatly appreciated. He did a great job, cleaned up after the job was finished, and we are very satisfied with the finished job."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

The amount of time a standby generator can run continuously is around 3,000 hours on average. However, standby generators can generally run indefinitely as long as they have a continuous fuel supply. Generators hooked up to a home’s natural gas supply are the best option for extended usage, as these won’t rely on a finite fuel supply based on how much you have in storage. Generators running on liquid propane or diesel won’t last as long, as these require fuel storage and regular refueling to stay running.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

Natural gas generators are designed to run for extended periods of time, such as power outages during a natural disaster. Since there’s no limit to the supply of natural gas, they don’t need to stop for refills. However, generators do need maintenance, including pauses to check and add oil. Constantly running them will also cause a lot more wear and tear, leading to a shorter lifespan.
