"Steve and his crew were amazing. They rebuilt our dock and roof better than anyone else. We had our dock rebuilt 7 yrs ago the company did not put the piling into the ground and they rotted away so the roof and platform were not supported. Our walkway was unlevel and multiple posts needed to be replaced. Steve and his team plus Cole rebuilt everything perfectly. His price was so reasonable. He showed up on time and not only did what he said he would do. He and his team went above and beyond. I can’t recommend him more highly. If you are looking for perfection and honesty he is your man. Thank you Steve and DockMD."

"Very positive experience from the first contact with Rob to the final walk-through at completion. Rob and Michael arrived on schedule, explained all steps in the process for our house wash, patio, pool deck and driveway pressure wash. The fair pricing, preparation and care of our property and final results exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be using him again in the future!"

"Jeff is conscientious and has a broad base of knowledge. He also has a personality trait that I appreciated in my former handyman in another city: creativity. When unexpected hurdles arise with certain projects, which they frequently do in my experience, he thinks outside the the box and comes up with a good alternative solution. He discusses this alternative option with you before proceeding. He is an enthusiastic problem solver, in other words."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The average cost to professionally clean or pressure wash a deck is around $150, with prices typically ranging from $100 to $600. Several factors influence the final price, including the deck's size, material, condition, and how long it has been since its last cleaning. For a smaller deck of about 300 square feet, you might pay around $100. For a larger deck of 1,000 square feet or more, the cost could be closer to $300 to $400. Decks that are very dirty or haven't been cleaned in years may require more time and special detergents, which will increase the price. The deck's material also plays a role. Wood decks often cost more to clean because they require a gentle power washing technique to avoid damage. Composite decks are typically less expensive to clean, and cleaning a metal deck may cost around $100.

A wood deck requires annual cleaning and regular inspections for loose or broken boards, nails, and screws. It should be refinished by applying a stain or sealer every two to three years to protect the wood from water damage, rot, mildew, and sun fading. The exact frequency can depend on the climate and the deck's exposure to sun and moisture. If your deck is painted, it will need repainting approximately every 10 years. Signs that your deck needs refinishing include faded, splintering, or warping boards.

You can add a roof to most decks, but you need to have it inspected first. If your deck didn’t come with a roof initially, it may not be able to handle the weight without some structural changes. You can add additional supports to your existing deck to safely add a roof, and tying your deck’s roof to an exterior wall can help add some structural stability, but remember these aren’t DIY projects and need to be left to a pro.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.
