"It was a very good experience, especially since we only received call backs from 2 of the 5 arborist/tree service companies we contacted. So lucky for us that we chose Flying Squirrel. David is very knowledgeable about our native trees and shrubs and carefully explained how he intended to remove our 50 ft trees with the least amount of damage to the rest of our landscaping. David and his crew cut down 4 Norfolk Island Pines in one day, The following day, a stump grinder did his part and then all the debris was hauled away. Later that same day David and Amy did even more raking and clean up, They left us in great shape. I wish we had more trees to cut down, we would definitely hire Flying Squirrel again!"

"Cal and crew arrived on time. They did an excellent job of trimming and thinning the branches of a huge camphor tree that was hanging over our house and brushing the neighbor's roof. The tree looks great and he gave us some pointers about the maintenance of it. They also cleaned the dead fronds and seed pod looking things from our palms. They removed all the debris when they were finished and the yard never looked better. I highly recommend Atlantic Tree Service and will definitely be calling them back when the trees need trimming again.

You can tell they’re experienced and take pride in their work. Highly recommend them for any tree or property work."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Tree roots are hearty and complex systems, so they don’t die immediately after the rest of the tree is removed. If you leave the root system in place, it takes anywhere from two to seven years for it to run out of nutrients. It is worth noting, however, that the roots stop growing and expanding after cutting down the rest of the tree.

A pro can guide you on the alternatives to tree topping depending on the specific issues within your trees. For example, if you’re dealing with breakage and cracks in your tree, they may suggest canopy reduction, which removes less than 25% of the tree’s limbs. If you’re dealing with lesser damage, some intentional pruning may be all you need. If you’re looking to get a clearer view through your tree, the pro may also try windowing or skirting your tree.

On grafted trees, tree suckers will grow from the root stock, not the branches grafted onto it. Therefore, the leaves and characteristics of the suckers aren’t the same as the tree because they are different varieties. Root stock has more hardiness, strength, or drought tolerance than its grafted limbs, so if the suckers are from fruit or flowers, it might be different than the main part of your tree.

For trimming trees, your best tool is a pair of pruning shears or loppers. Both options work best for branches that are under 3 inches in diameter. Trimming trees with a larger diameter may require a robust tool like a small chainsaw or a handsaw, so take into account your tree’s diameter when deciding between tools.

Trees don’t usually grow back after being cut down. Some particularly robust tree species may start sending up new stems from a stump to recover, but those stems won’t become a “tree” like before. Generally, trees don’t recover from being entirely cut down, which is why it’s important to be careful when making a decision. When you cut down a tree, it’s a good idea to make plans to remove the stump, even if it’s unlikely to grow back.
