"Brian first repaired a wall in my house that had water damage, then he did a few other jobs such as 2 closet installations, tv installation, pressure washing and a couple of other repair jobs around my house. He seemed extremely skilled and hardworking. He was very personable and courteous, and he’s a Christian, too! He did a great job, I’m very pleased with his work. I highly recommend Totka Construction for carpentry & construction work."

"If you are interested in completing a home repair, improvement or remodeling project, please reach out to Better Renovation & Improvements LLC. Expert workmanship, stellar customer service and consummate professionals. Tallon MacDonald is highly experienced, giving him the skills to discuss your project and interpret your vision. I had a vague idea of what I wanted to accomplish but with the experience, knowledge and design-expertise, Better Renovation, with little input from me, planned the project, presented recommendations to me and completed the project in an expeditious fashion, with quality and workmanship the priority. I will continue to hire Better Renovation for all my current and future needs."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best paver for your pool deck depends on your budget, style, and how much maintenance you’re willing to invest. Granite is one of the best low-cost pavers for pool decks. It’s very slip-resistant and durable, too, making it a top pick. Travertine is a high-quality material that resists freeze-thaw cycles, looks stunning, and won’t get hot in the summer. The only downside to travertine is that it costs more than granite.

Unless you’re using a 2-in-1 formula or painting over an existing coat of paint, it pays to apply a coat of primer ahead of your new paint. Decks see a lot of footfall and exposure to extreme and sudden temperature changes and moisture levels. The primer promotes better paint adhesion, moisture repellency, and a smoother finish, which means you’ll often need fewer coats of paint.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, especially for smaller or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks do not require digging or pouring. However, their use is dependent on local building codes. Some areas, particularly those prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes, may not permit the use of deck pier blocks. It is essential to consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.

The cost to build a second-story deck averages $4,800, though the actual price could range as low as $420 to upwards of $16,000. While labor costs range between 35% and 50% of the total project cost, the materials and complexity of design will ultimately lead you to save or spend more money on this home addition.

When staining a deck, don’t skip surface prep, avoid staining damp or dirty boards, and don’t apply stain in extreme heat, cold, or wet conditions. Never overload the wood with a stain, as too much can cause tackiness or peeling. Also, don’t forget to test a small area first to ensure the color and finish look right.
