"Erik was very honest about everything we needed. He came in resurfaced the pool, changed the coping to travertine, and repaired, and resurfaced the deck to concrete. He was the only company that told us the truth that putting travertine on the patio will cause problems with our sliding glass doors (water getting in). In the end, we paid more than the initial quote, however, we have an old pool which had unexpected issues and we added extra accessories as well. But even with that, his final bill was still less than some of the other companies that gave us quotes."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Building a deck without a permit could lead to fines for both the homeowner and the contractor. The exact penalties will depend on your state and municipal building laws. You might also be required to remove the deck and apply for a permit before you can build another. While it might be tempting to skip the permit to save a few bucks, it’ll cost you much more if you’re caught.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation or substructure for support. This base is typically a frame composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame can be built from various materials, such as composite, plastic, timber, or metal, depending on your budget, deck type, and environmental conditions. For maximum stability, a professional deck builder may recommend installing this frame on top of a solid concrete base. It is best to discuss the most suitable substructure design and materials for your specific project with a professional.

Composite decking boards aren't your only options for building a deck. There are several other types of materials for decks, including wood and aluminum decking. Wood decking comes in many different wood species, offering natural beauty and classy timelessness to your yard. Aluminum is a lightweight, water-resistant, and low-maintenance material that is also non-slip.

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.

A cedar deck can increase your home's value if the project is executed well. The value added by a deck is influenced by factors such as location, materials, and craftsmanship. In regions with warmer climates, decks are particularly desirable, enhancing outdoor living spaces.

The key to getting the most value out of your investment, both in terms of home value and personal enjoyment, is to make sure your deck is built to exacting standards. You should consult with a professional deck builder to get the best results and the highest ROI.
