Customers say: Quick response

"It is rare that I come across a contractor that is worthy of an all-around 5-star review, but Tom Dodge absolutely deserves that distinction. Tom efficiently installed a central vac system in my existing home over two days with surprisingly little disruption or construction intrusion. I found him to be prompt, courteous, knowledgeable and easy to work with in addressing my concerns and requirements. Tom is an honest, hard-working, hands-on, conscientious professional who does all of the installation work himself. I am very pleased with the installation and functionality of the retractable hose system. I highly recommend the system and am very satisfied that I hired Tom Dodge for the installation."

"It went amazing, he did a great job pressure washing. The price was great at only 300.00. Tyler's customer service was above par, he answered every question and even after having to reschedule a few times because of my busy schedule he was patient and got me in. I will use him in the future for everything I need outside work wise. He is a great young business man."

"I did receive a phone call within a few hours of my request. Unfortunately, they do not repair televisions and indicated that they would contact Service Magic to adjust their listing. Did give me the name of a local shop that does televison repairs. Home Technology Group sounds like a great company and I will definitely keep them in mind for the future. A quick call-back and very informative, just not the right company for my job request."

"Zaire was wonderful — indeed, I’ve had him back since, which is the best rec I can give. He has helped hang several pieces of art, consulted on the strange / unexpected walls that were giving me a design headache in an old Philly home, built complex furniture that I couldn’t handle, and best of all completed a multi-day project where he ideated a solution, brought all the materials, and hung a vintage FRIENDLY’S sign from my ceiling — ensuring it worked on a light switch too! Above and beyond (+ he is kind and funny too). 10/10 would definitely recommend."

Central Vacuum Systems questions, answered by experts

It can be difficult to know right away if your central vacuum is clogged since it operates quietly compared to regular vacuums. However, there are a couple of signs you can look for. If you feel like it’s losing suction or isn’t cleaning effectively, then there’s likely a clog somewhere.

Make sure you turn the vacuum on and feel the end of the hose handle. If you don’t feel any suction, then you’re dealing with a clog in the hose. You can see if the clog is further down in the system by attaching the hose to each outlet until you find the one with the least amount of suction.

They’ll use more electricity than the average upright vacuum, but not remarkably more. Most power units plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and don’t have significant power demands. You shouldn’t notice an increase in electricity bills. If you have any specific questions about energy costs, ask your installer as you examine purchase decisions. Larger power units will need more electricity for their suction levels.

Maintaining your central vacuum cleaner is crucial to extending its lifespan. Ensuring the filter is cleaned or changed often is vital to ensuring clogs don’t impact your motor. In addition, inspecting motor brushes regularly and lubricating the engine when needed helps keep it in tip-top shape. Finally, cleaning the central vacuum hose of dirt and debris helps keep clogs at bay, especially if you’ve vacuumed something wet or sticky.

No. Only the hose or the attachments are portable in a central vacuum system. A portable vacuum is a standalone model like a stick, canister, or upright. A central vacuum system is defined by a central power unit, which is installed in one place like an AC unit, and the connected network of piping to funnel the suction.

Common repairs for central vacuum cleaners include motor repair, electrical repair, and blocked filters. Central vacuum motor issues typically come with a burning smell and loss of suction. With these issues, you might need simple lubrication to keep it running smoothly, or for more extreme problems, you could need a motor replacement.

Electrical problems or losing suction strength, might be reasons to swap out electrical components for new ones. However, a local central vacuum repair professional can tell you the best plan of action for your system.
