"I was in search for movers to help me and my family move to NC. I didn't feel like doing the move myself this time around and sure I found this company OM Van Lines last minute. I was offered a great deal to get my move done and it wasn't as expensive as I thought I was going to be. My wife and family are happy and just wanted to say thank you guys. You guys made this a very pleasant experience. Highly recommend."

"Bob did everything just right. He answered my emails timely and provided ample detail as to how he works, his billing, and his schedule. Once we discussed the projects to be done, Bob let me know his availability. He texted the night before he was to arrive and then again in the morning. Once at my house, we walked through the projects, and he set to work. Bob brings a well stocked van so he never had to go back to the shop to get something. While working, Bob put down protect cloths and was very good at cleaning-up. Bob moved from project to project and did not waste time chatting. He moved quickly and efficiently. Never once did Bob try to up-sell me or push to expand my project list. Bob completed five projects in 1 1/2 days that would have taken me several weekends. I recommend Bob without reservation. I will have him back to tackle more projects soon."

Moving questions, answered by experts

The average cost to hire professional movers is approximately $1,700, but the total price can range from as low as $920 to over $12,000 depending on the move's complexity. For local moves, typically under 100 miles, costs generally fall between $920 and $2,530. Long-distance moves are more expensive, with prices ranging from $2,700 to $10,000 or more.

Several key factors influence the final cost:

  • Distance and Home Size: The mileage of the move and the size of your home.

  • Number of Movers: Hourly rates can range from $25 to $50 for one or two movers, increasing to $100 to $200 for a team of four or more.

  • Services: Additional services like packing, unpacking, and storage will add to the cost.

  • Specialty Items: Moving large or delicate items such as pianos, vehicles, or large aquariums incurs extra charges.

  • Timing and Access: The time of year, your specific moving date, and the ease of access to your home can affect rates.

Don’t forget to account for other potential costs like moving supplies and tipping your movers.

It’s typically more cost-effective to move a building along with its accessories than to demolish and rebuild it from scratch. However, that’s only if you can move the accessories without damaging them. However, if you plan to demolish the accessories anyway, it is advisable to do so before the move to save costs.

To prepare furniture for moving, detach furniture legs if possible. If the legs must stay on, wrap them with foam wrap or taped blankets to help prevent damage. You can also buy dedicated moving “socks” for furniture legs.

Planning your office move should ideally start three to six months or more in advance. This timeframe allows plenty of time for tasks such as researching moving companies, creating a budget, coordinating with employees, decluttering and organizing, packing, and addressing any logistical challenges. Starting early also ensures that you have flexibility in scheduling and can handle unexpected hiccups that may arise during the planning process.

It’s vital to transport a gun safe upright. This type of safe is designed to remain upright, and laying it on its back or sides can potentially damage the safe. That’s why it’s essential to ensure you have a moving truck or trailer that can withstand the weight and is high enough to transport it safely.
