"Oscar and his worker were on time, professional, courteous, pleasant and left my basement chimney area cleaner than when they found it! I believed Oscar's assessment of my problem. The work-chimney cap, liner, crown repair & masonry work- has held up in windy, rainy snowy weather. I highly recommend Quality 1st Maintenance!"

"I highly recommend Certified Chimney of Holtsville. A lightning strike caused damage to my chimney. I needed a new liner as well as a new cement crown and other work done to bring my chimney back up to snuff. The owner, Charles and his two associates (Christian and Christopher) did an outstanding job. They are extremely professional, neat and friendly. They completed the job quickly and the most important thing is that I was given a very decent price. If you need chimney work done, donâ t hesitate to call them."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

If your gas fireplace is vented through a chimney, a chimney cap is highly recommended. While not all gas fireplaces require a traditional chimney, for those that use one, a cap provides several key benefits. It prevents rain, debris, and animals from entering the chimney, which can cause blockages or damage. A cap also helps prevent downdrafts that could push harmful gases like carbon monoxide back into your home. When installing a cap, ensure it is appropriate for a gas fireplace and does not restrict proper ventilation.

Yes, a pellet stove can heat an entire house—as long as you choose one that’s large enough for that purpose. For context, pellet stoves generate between 8,000 and 90,000 British Thermal Units (BTUs), and you’ll need 30 to 60 BTUs per square foot, depending on your climate zone. If you’re unsure which size pellet stove to buy, reach out to a local pellet or wood stove repair company.

A properly constructed and maintained chimney crown can last 50 to 75 years. However, its lifespan can be significantly shorter—20 years or less—if it was poorly constructed, improperly installed, or damaged. Factors like using the wrong materials or failing to prepare the brick around the flue can lead to moisture buildup and premature breakdown, potentially resulting in a more costly rebuild.

In some cases, you can use a fireplace once the insert has been removed. However, before burning a fire, you must have a professional inspect it and the chimney to make sure they're functioning properly and no damage has occurred from removing the insert. That’s because using a fireplace without an insert could create fire hazards due to issues with airflow and heat dispersion, depending on the fireplace design and material. A professional can advise on whether you should make certain repairs or modifications before using your fireplace as an open hearth.

Common issues discovered during a chimney inspection or cleaning include creosote buildup, cracked liners, structural degeneration or masonry degradation, and obstructions such as blocked flues or animal nests. These issues are potential safety hazards that can lead to combustion problems or poor air quality if not addressed.
