"Al was fantastic! He clearly explained that my fireplace was shutting off as a safety feature due to low oxygen levels. He also reassembled the logs in the firebox and showed me the proper way to start and stop the fireplace. Highly recommend his service!"

"It went well. We had years of creosote built up.. a hazardous condition. We had chimney companies out in the past who looked at that chimney and said it "didn't need cleaning" and then went ahead and cleaned our oil burner chimney -- a far easier task. We were glad to finally have a company that knew what they were doing. We use our fireplace a great deal and feel safer now that our chimney has been properly cleaned. Our fireplace required a far deeper chemical treatment to loosen the creosote that had built up over the years. More expensive than we had anticipated, but the company worked with us on the cost. Definitely recommend."

"Saul was terrific! He was referred to me by a client that recommended his exceptional work. We had an emergency situation regarding our collapsed fireplace. He came out ASAP to assess the job and put us ahead of gua other clients due to its prompt attention needed. Would highly recommend this company. Very professional, intelligent, thorough and the price was fair. We will be yaing this company in the spring to rebuild our fireplace!!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Some of the reasons a chimney damper won't close properly include shoddy installation, age-related damage, or heavy snow or ice affecting a top-sealing type. Poor chimney maintenance and a buildup of rust, debris, or creosote can also cause dampers to jam. Annual inspections and chimney sweep costs are worth it to help you avoid a damper disaster.

The lifespan of a chimney damper depends on several factors, including its material, how often the fireplace is used, and the amount of debris that enters the chimney. With proper maintenance, an average damper can last about 20 years. To ensure it is functioning correctly, it is best to have it professionally inspected. Some experts recommend an annual inspection, while others suggest having a chimney sweep inspect and clean it every two years. A professional can assess the damper's condition and determine if a replacement is necessary.

In some aspects, yes, new wood stoves are better than old ones. For example, today’s EPA emission limits for wood-burning stoves are much lower than they were several decades ago. Stoves that meet these stricter standards produce less air pollution, reduce fire risks, and decrease your risk of inhaling harmful particles.

You can research your fireplace insert or retrofit by checking out the EPA wood stove database. The database includes information, such as a model's emission rate, efficiency, and carbon dioxide output.

Costs range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the model, labor, and venting requirements.
