If your drain doesn’t have metal crosshairs or crossbars, you should use a tub drain extractor. These tools create a grip on the drain so you can turn it using a 1/2-inch ratchet drive, drain key, or wrench. Your drain may not have crosshairs if it's old and broken.
The P-trap (or S-trap in older homes) under your shower is designed to prevent sewer gas from coming back up, so you shouldn’t normally experience foul odors coming from your shower drain. If you do, the vent stack that introduces air into your plumbing system may be clogged, or you may have a more severe sewer main blockage. In either case, hire a plumber to fix the issue for you.
There are a few ways to unclog a toilet without a plunger. Break up the clog with homemade solutions containing soap, vinegar, and baking soda, or simply let hot water spend some time in the drain. You can also use a two-liter soda bottle filled with water to push pressurized water into the pipe to dislodge the debris (see the steps above).
Drain clearing removes debris and clogs from drain pipes enough to allow water to drain properly. On the other hand, drain cleaning removes all of the material from the pipe so that water flows unrestricted, which is a longer-term solution. Your plumbing pro will be able to recommend the right service depending on the clog size, frequency of issues, and surrounding pipework.
On average, a plumber will take 30 minutes to two hours to clear a clogged drain. If the clog is located close to the drain or an access point and isn’t severe, the project will take about half an hour. If the clog is deep within your plumbing system or is a severe blockage, it can take two or more hours to remove the clog. For this reason, main line clogs tend to take longer, usually between two and three hours.
