Small jobs welcome

"After the storage "system" in one of our closets collapsed, Designer Closets proposed a solution that met our needs and added value to our home. The work was completed as scheduled and the results are more than we could have hoped for! We ended up having three closets redone. The service was excellent and the workmanship of the highest quality."

"We love our cabinets! They look fantastic while remaining affordable. The friendly staff at AWD helped us from start to finish. They are very knowledgeable and gave us advice and tips when needed. They were receptive and patient with our ever-changing needs. Once we finalized our purchase, we received our cabinets within two weeks! The cabinets are very sturdy and the color is beautiful. The hinges and hardware are high quality. We are extremely pleased with AWD and would recommend them to any friends or family looking for good cabinets at a fair price."

"It is very convenient, and reasonably priced.  The only thing that they could work on is the punctuality of the pick up times.  The rest of the experience was satisfactory.  My daughter has also used them.  I would highly recommend this service."

The world can be a crazy place at times and it is tough to find balance, inside and outside of the home. It seems impossible to achieve peace of mind and an organized life in such an atmosphere of craziness, but actually, it is not impossible at all. You just have to start small, because at the end of the day, all you really have control over is what’s inside the home. More specifically, it starts in your closet.\n\nA well-arranged and well-organized closet will help you find balance and open up other possibilities for your home and life. That is what we do at Designer Closets. We work closely with you to design, build, and install custom closet systems that will redefine your space and your needs, from the initial design plan until the final touches are made. You will work with one of our experienced design consultants so that your closet is arranged exactly to your specifications.\n\nHere’s how it works: at the beginning of the process, we listen to our customer’s needs, then we draw out a plan in CAD to show you our unique design before building and installing your custom-made closet. We treat your home the way it should be treated: with care, respect, and professionalism. Remember, your closet is an extension of your home and life. Designing, building and installing custom closets isn’t the only thing we do; we also make solid wood and laminate pantries, garages, homes, offices and cabinets. If you have any questions or if you would like to schedule a consultation, please contact us today. Please note, that although we are located in Massachusetts, we work throughout Connecticut as well.\n

"Matt was on time, professional and left the area neat and clean. I am so happy I had our master bedroom closets done (his & her). My husband came home and was very happy and surprised at the quality and space that was added to his closet. Would hire again."

Closets questions, answered by experts

You can design your own closet, but it’s usually better to hire a professional to do the work for you. Not only will you get years of design experience to guide you toward the right layout and material choices, but you’ll also only pay slightly more hiring a professional than you would creating your own plans and hiring a carpenter. A high-quality closet designer can provide insight into how to lay out your closet, and they may be able to find you a good deal on the carpentry or complete the work using an affordable, in-house team.

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.

When storing your clothes long-term, first consider the container's breathability. While plastic bags, cardboard boxes, or vacuum sealing may be great options for short-term storage, they won’t help your clothes hold up in the long term. Breathable plastic boxes and fabric bags help with airflow, prevent mold or mildew from building up, and allow proper airflow.

A "reach-in pantry" is a smaller, cabinet-style pantry that allows you to grab items by simply reaching inside. On the other hand, a "walk-in pantry" is like a closet or small room that offers a larger space that you can physically enter to get your food. Walk-in pantries allow for more customizable shelving. A reach-in pantry is usually around 5 feet wide by 2 feet deep, while a walk-in pantry is closer to 5 feet by 5 feet or larger.

Fortunately, there are no hard and fast rules or regulations regarding the height of closet shelving. However, the typical height for a single closet shelf with a hanging bar is 70 inches from the floor. For a double-hanging system, use 84 to 85 inches from the floor for the top one and 42 inches for the lower.
