"Williams & Associates installed a Buderus oil-fired boiler and stainless-steel chimney liner. Bruce's design was a significant upgrade over my 35-year-old boiler system. He clearly explained the process and installation, and he was receptive to my questions. Bruce is knowledgeable, straightforward, and responsive. The price was very fair, considering the quality of the work and other estimates I had gotten. I would not hesitate to recommend Williams & Associates."

"When first scheduled, they did not show and when I called they said that the weather was too cold to be working that week. So we rescheduled. When scheduled the second time, they again did not show, so I telephoned after an hour of delay and learned that their van was disabled and was asked to call the office and reschedule. When scheduled the third time they arrived as scheduled, however when I told them it would be more convenient for them to use the driveway on the opposite side of the house, they misunderstood my intention that they would back out onto the street and reenter on the other driveway. Instead, the driver drove over our back lawn the through a narrow opening between a tree and our brick patio. In the process, the van caught the corner of the patio wall and dislodged the top later of the stone border. The two workers tried to push it back, but it needs repair. I told them we would have the repair done by the worker who originally put in the patio (only 2 years ago!). While the workers did the work on the chimney I wrote up what happened with the patio and asked the worker to read it and sign if he agree that I had accurately described what happened. He read and signed and took a copy for his supervisor. After a week passed I phoned the company and had to call a couple times and leave messages before I got a voicemail back from the company saying that he didn't understand why I needed to have my own workman do the repair when his workers knew how to do such a repair. I never got him back on the phone. When I have the work done (estimate is ($150-200) I will send a bill, but certainly no commitment has been made that the company intends to cover our expense and no apology for the incident has been given. Also, if the chimney was inspected while they did the sweeping, no report of what they found was ever given. I was so focused on the patio problem that I did not think to ask about that as they left. Very, very disappointed."

"Excellent service, very fast response to my request for service, picked up laptop, diagnosed issues. Initially thought it was an OS update issue but the hard drive had failed along with other components (including 'CPU). Because other components were involved, a new solid state hard drive was put into a laptop with a working processor - same type CPU as in the failed unit. The laptop was repaired and returned in less than a week. This company picked up and dropped off the laptop (driving from Huntsville, AL (about 60-70 minutes)-- great service in this covid environment. I would recommend this company to my family./friends and will use again."

"Overall, I wasn't happy with the entire experience. It said, in small print, up to X number of square feet or cubic feet or however they do it and then, there might be extra service charge for this and this and this. My big problem was that it ended up costing me pretty much double what the original coupon had cost. I wasn't happy because I checked around with some of my local providers. This guy was out of Springfield, Massachusetts. I got a couple of quotes from local providers. Of course, it was too late by then. I had already put up the initial $5000 to Angie's List. His price ended up being close to $2000 more. I could have just had a local guy come in and do the job. So, I wasn't happy about that. It took a long time for both myself and him to connect. Some of it was my fault and some of it was his fault. He was hard to get hold of and often, very hard to get him to respond to me. He was going through some personal issues with his family, which I understood and I was fine with. So he ended up doing the job probably far after the coupon even expired. So he was accommodating about that and I appreciated that about him. He actually is a nice guy to talk to. But he ended up putting the wrong color roof on and I wasn't happy. I had gone away for the few days that he was doing the roof, which I realize now wasn't very smart. But because I work out of my home, I couldn't work and have somebody banging on my roof. So I ended up leaving to go somewhere else to be able to do my work during the period of time he wandered on my roof. So it wasn't until I got back home and discovered the color of the roof, which I wasn't happy about. I didn't end up calling and complaining to him about it because it didn't seem reasonable to me to make him comeback and change the roof. So I was just not happy. It ended up costing far far more and when I talked to him about that, he told me that Angie's List sets the price and not him and so I should complain to Angie's List. I don't know the truth of it. I really don't understand how the whole process works. They did one other thing I wasn't happy with. I have a back attic storage area. It was part of the roof that was done. This had not been an issue before they did my roof. The nails that they used were much longer and more pointed than whoever had put up my initial roof. So I came into my storage area about a month after they did this roof and found that there were wood chips all over my possessions back there. With these pointing nails there, I had to be really careful because I couldn't poke myself in the head, trying to get to my things. They hadn't told me about it and they hadn't warned me about it. I would have appreciated if he had said, "If you have anything, cover them up because there will be wood chips from us banging nails into your roof. So there was just a bunch of stuff like that. The workmen were professional enough. They were polite enough. They didn't leave a huge mess around my house. It looked like they had tried pretty hard to clean it up pretty well. Angie's List offers what they say is a great deal and then, it doesn't turn out to be a deal at all. By the time, you're in the middle of this deal and you've already put up so much money, you can't walk away from the deal. So, it was not a happy experience for me. I've been really questioning whether I want to continue to be an Angie's List member because I haven't felt good about a lot of things that I've done."

Boiler Repair questions, answered by experts

If you hire a professional to replace your gas furnace’s thermocouple, you’ll usually pay between $150 and $250. Since thermocouples often fail due to a lack of maintenance, you may be able to avoid—or at least delay—a thermocouple replacement by taking good care of your furnace. This means scheduling annual furnace inspections, changing the filters at least once per season, and cleaning the burners occasionally.

Some high-quality steam boilers come with 10-year warranties, but a well-installed, properly maintained model can last at least 20 to 25 years. Learning how to clean a boiler, getting an annual professional service, and keeping up with maintenance and repairs on your heating system are all important for getting the most out of your model.

Properly maintained stucco can enhance insulation, reducing energy loss.

If you go to turn it counterclockwise and it won’t turn anymore, it’s open. Like most other valves, you should be able to turn a radiator valve counterclockwise (to the left) to open it and clockwise (right) to close it. To close a radiator valve, turn it clockwise until you meet some resistance and can’t turn anymore, but do so carefully to avoid breaking the valve.

There are many signs and symptoms to look out for that can indicate that your HVAC system needs repair, including the following:

  • Your indoor air is uncomfortably hot or cold.

  • Your energy bills suddenly increase without explanation.

  • Your AC is blowing warm air or not blowing air at all.

  • You notice leaks around your HVAC equipment.

  • Your equipment makes unusual noises during operation.

  • You notice strange odors coming from your equipment.

  • You notice that the humidity in your home is higher than normal.

  • The thermostat no longer seems to match the actual temperature.
