"This project went smoothly from start to finish. The Stanleys are a pleasure to deal with; personable, attentive to detail, and highly professional - as you'd expect fifth generation pavers to be. Our work crew arrived on schedule, broke up the old driveway and had the pieces loaded and gone in an hour or so. They laid plenty of gravel and two layers of paving, very carefully graded to run off into our existing drainage grate. The resulting driveway is exactly what we wanted, with fine touches all around like a freshly cut transition to the street pavement, nicely beveled sides, and smooth edges around plantings. We did not haggle on price and we received our money's worth - recommend without reservation."

"Job was beautifully done and more than complete for what I asked for. Am also happy that a lower price was negotiated. Would be glad to request again if my regular plow side is unavailable."

Concrete Driveways questions, answered by experts

You should avoid using a pressure washer on any surface or item that could be damaged by the high-pressure spray, as some materials are too delicate to withstand the force.

Key items and surfaces to avoid include:

  • Electrical Components: Never pressure wash electrical systems, as water can cause short-circuits and create a safety hazard. This includes utility meters, breaker boxes, electrical outlets, generators, and HVAC or air conditioner units.

  • Delicate and Fragile Materials: Fragile items can crack, shatter, or be stripped by the pressure. Avoid pressure washing windows, glass, light fixtures, shingled roofs (especially asphalt), and stucco.

  • Painted, Stained, or Sealed Surfaces: Unless your goal is to strip the finish, do not pressure wash painted surfaces, stained wood (like decks), or anything with a protective seal that could be stripped away. Be especially cautious with older surfaces that may contain lead paint.

  • Soft Woods and Certain Decking: Delicate surfaces like softwood, composite decking, and antique or wooden patio furniture can be etched or damaged. If you must wash wood, use a lower-powered pressure washer with a wide-angle nozzle to prevent damage.

  • Living Things: Never use a pressure washer on people, pets, or plants. The force can cause serious injury and will destroy landscaping.

Deciding whether to buy or rent a pressure washer depends on your budget and how often you plan to use it.

  • Renting: The daily rental cost typically ranges from $40 to $175. Renting can be more cost-effective for a one-time project.

  • Buying: The purchase price for a pressure washer can range from $100 to over $1,000. More specifically, electric models generally cost between $100 and $400, while gas models run from $300 to $600.

If you anticipate using a pressure washer multiple times a year, buying one is often a better long-term investment. When purchasing, remember that a higher-quality machine will likely deliver better and more reliable results.

Always begin by removing large debris, leaves, and branches from your lawn to make room for the rest of your lawn maintenance checklist. Move on to mowing, weeding, and edging in the spaces between your lawn and garden. Lastly, clean off all hardscapes, porches, and patios for a fresh and tidy appearance.

Regular sealing, proper drainage, and periodic inspections prevent premature wear and cracking.

These parts of the house are okay to pressure wash:

  • Natural wood decking that is not stained or painted

  • Siding made of vinyl, aluminum, and cement

  • Concrete

  • Most children’s toys

  • Outdoor furniture

  • Trash cans and recycle bins
