"i desperately needed gutter cleaning the day before a major storm. I spoke with Dave initially and he worked with me to make it possible and sent out his crew by the afternoon to my house. His crew was so professional and worked very hard to make sure that all the work was done for me and they cleaned up and got rid of all the mess. This company could not have been nicer and helpful. I highly recommend them and am thankful that I found their business."

"Hi All, We just used American Junk Removal to gut our bathrooms and haul away all of our appliances, carpets and other chaos in our home gut renovation. Adam Chop (owner) and his team could NOT have been more professional. They arrived on time, were completely professional, COVID aware and compliant and we would recommend them without reservation for any "junk removal" or demo needs you may have. They did not ask us to share or promote them, but I was so impressed with their service and professionalism combined with the fact that they were HALF of what our contractor quoted us for the same job - that I needed to share their services. "The Junk Boys crew truly did an amazing job getting rid of junk for me. They were clean, efficient, and super easy to work with. I’ve had many people do junk removal for me before, and Junk Boys are the only team I would rehire. They are now my go-to for junk removal, and I highly recommend them. In addition to doing great work, the Junk Boys are also super friendly and nice."

Hauling questions, answered by experts

While a rented dumpster can handle a wide variety of materials, there are significant restrictions on what is allowed. Generally, you can dispose of most non-hazardous household junk, yard waste, and construction debris.

Accepted items typically include:

  • Furniture, carpets, old linens, and toys

  • Wood and yard debris

  • Small appliances and excess trash

  • Renovation waste like old finishes, building debris, and roofing materials (unless they contain lead paint or asbestos)

However, you cannot put toxic, flammable, or hazardous materials in a dumpster. Prohibited items almost always include:

  • Paint, gasoline, oil, and other fuels

  • Household cleaners and other chemicals

  • Electronics, batteries, and tires

  • Refrigerators, hot water tanks, and medical waste

Since regulations can vary by location and company, it is essential to check with your dumpster rental provider for their specific list of accepted and prohibited items before you begin.

Composting can be a great alternative if you’re looking for a way to dispose of food scraps without a garbage disposal. If you have the space in your yard, you can install a compost bin or compost pile and add food waste. After enough time and heat, the compost will break down and can be used to mulch your garden.

If you don’t have space for compost, consider city-run programs or local companies that will pick up your food waste.

Garbage removal is a project you can do yourself, but hiring a professional to get the job done is often worthwhile. Depending on the type and amount of junk, you could be looking at a very labor-intensive job, dumping fees, dumpster charges, and potentially unsafe working conditions. Hiring a professional junk removal company not only saves you time and energy and keeps you safe, but it also means you don’t have to worry about carting the junk away or coordinating a dumpster and getting a permit for it.

Estate cleanout services aren’t typically priced per square foot, although you can often expect costs to increase along with the square footage of a property. The real factor at play is the number of items that need to be handled. More items, especially bulky items, mean higher costs, and larger homes tend to hold more items.

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.
