"Matt's Pro Plumbing did good work at a reasonable price. There were a couple of hiccups that occurred but Matt got everything straightened out at the end. I would hire him again."

"A First Rate experience. Showed up same day, diagnosed the issue in < 15 minutes (as I thought, well pump was finally dead (going on 32 years old so I can't say it owed us anything)), 1.5 hours later water was back on with a new pump. Price was right in the range it was supposed to be in. We will be having him back next week to do additional work with our filtration system and some water testing we wanted done. If our opinion changes I will report, but as it sits, this guy is a keeper, and his card will be getting space on the fridge."

"This was the second time we used H L Bowman for our plumbing needs and we have been impressed both times. Their plumbers are prompt, courteous, and friendly, in addition to being great at their craft. For this visit, I had a leak under a kitchen sink and did not realize that I needed to have the entire faucet replaced. The plumber recommended the closest plumbing supply store and waited while I selected the one I wanted. He efficiently did the replacement. Very happy with H L Bowman and would highly recommend them."

"I was impressed by Bob's knowledge, responsiveness, and ability to explain to me (in layman's terms) what needed to get done, and what problems might arise. I thought I was facing a disaster with basement leaking and he put everything to rights in a couple of hours (and repaired some faucets to boot!). I could not be more pleased or recommend him more strongly."

Percolation Tests questions, answered by experts

If you own a stereo microscope, you should be able to see the fibers. The stereo microscope often can perform magnification up to 50x. But unless you have experience viewing asbestos fibers, you may not know exactly what you are seeing. Some fibers are curly, while others are long and straight. Blue, brown, white, and gray colored fibers are all possible.

Asbestos fibers can stay airborne for 48 to 72 hours, depending on the home's ventilation. Fibers can linger longer in enclosed spaces with poor airflow. Because the fibers are microscopic, they can easily remain suspended, making them difficult to detect without professional equipment.

Epoxying over asbestos tiles is generally considered a safe option when done correctly. Epoxy acts as a sealant, encapsulating the asbestos tiles and preventing the release of asbestos fibers into the air. The key is ensuring that the asbestos tiles are in good condition, firmly adhered to the substrate, and not damaged or deteriorating. This method is only appropriate for tiles that are undamaged and securely in place. If the asbestos tiles are already loose, damaged, or deteriorating, encapsulating them with epoxy may not be a sufficient solution, as it might not address the potential for ongoing asbestos exposure.

If you can locate building records, you may be able simply to see what type of tiles (or bonding agent) was used. Any flooring made between 1950 and 1989 more than likely contains asbestos. Asbestos tiles can also be slightly thicker than other tiles and often measure 9” x 9”, 12” x 12”, and 18” x 18. Black mastic was a commonly used adhesive that contains asbestos.

The signs of asbestos exposure are often subtle and may not appear for many years, or even decades, after initial contact. This long latency period is one of the primary dangers associated with asbestos.

When symptoms do manifest, they can include:

  • Shortness of breath

  • A persistent, dry cough

  • Chest pain or tightness

  • Fatigue

  • Wheezing

  • Weight loss

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • A dry, crackling sound from the lungs when breathing

These symptoms are non-specific and can be mistaken for other respiratory conditions, making diagnosis challenging. Prolonged exposure can lead to serious diseases as the asbestos fibers cause scarring and inflammation in the lungs. These conditions include asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

Due to the vague nature of early symptoms, regular medical check-ups are crucial for anyone with a known history of asbestos exposure, particularly in an occupational setting. If you suspect asbestos is present in your home, a professional inspection is recommended.
