Standard door sizes aren’t one-size-fits-all, but there are common go-to dimensions. For exterior doors—like your front door—36 inches wide by 80 inches tall is typical, though you’ll see 30- or 32-inch widths too, especially in older homes. Interior doors vary more. Bedrooms and bathrooms often use 30- to 32-inch widths, and closet doors can be anything from slim singles to wide bi-folds. The strike plate, hinges, and handle are the parts of a door most prone to damage. These parts see the most frequent use, causing them to wear and twear faster than other parts of a door. If you’re experiencing door issues, check these three parts first to see if they need repairing or replacing. 

You should prime interior doors before painting for the best results. If you do paint directly on the wood, you could see some of the grain patterns show through the paint, in which case you’d need to apply additional coats. Priming the surface before painting will reduce the number of coats and can better cover the grain pattern for a clean, finished look.

To move a couch through a narrow doorway, first measure the couch and the doorway to ensure it will fit. For a close fit, you can create more space by removing the interior door; tap out the hinge pins with a nail and shift the door sideways to remove it from its hinges. You may need to turn the couch on its side or move it in separate pieces, if possible. Using furniture sliders can also help you slide the couch through the doorway.

Most slab doors do not have hinge cutouts, making them a complete blank slate. You will have to measure and cut the mortises yourself. You can order a slab door from a home improvement store and ask them to make the cuts, although you still have to take the measurements independently.
