"I contracted with Energy Geeks to perform an Energy Audit (highly recommended) as well as to blow in cellulose insulation in my attic. This is my first time working with a company on Home Advisor and I honestly couldn't be more pleased now that the work has been completed. Jason provided me with a comprehensive quote after our initial consultation and then took the time to review it with me. He also performed an Energy Audit on my home and explained what I could personally do to help the situation as well as what they'd be doing during the air sealing/insulation installation. This was all new to me so I appreciated that very much. The job was completed on Monday of this week and although it's been warmer than normal lately the difference was immediately noticeable. Energy Geeks even let me know that I qualified for an Xcel Energy rebate and they submitted the paperwork for me. If you're looking for a legit, honest company for your insulation needs these guys are it. The pricing was more than fair, the communication was top notch, and their professionalism was way more than I expected. I wish every contractor were like this!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

You should not put fiberglass insulation in basements, since fiberglass is known to trap mold and mold is more commonly grown and produced in basements. You should also avoid placing insulation near water heaters, oil burners, or other hot appliances. For more information about the best and worst places to install insulation, consider hiring an insulation professional.

It’s technically possible to install loose-fill cellulose insulation without a blower, but it’s much more time-consuming, tedious, and dangerous. You’ll need to wear the proper protective coverings to handle the cellulose after it’s been doused in boric acid; use a shovel when you can to transport the material from the bag into the wall cavity.

That said, if you purchase cellulose materials at a home improvement store, ask if they rent out blowers for free or at a discounted rate. In many cases, if you buy the material from the store, they’ll rent out the blower at no extra cost.

Insulation can be made of cellulose, fiberglass, polyurethane, polystyrene, or mineral wool. Radiant barriers are often made of aluminum or other similarly reflective materials, but they will need to be paired with something else because they don’t provide heating benefits. Cellulose is among the most eco-friendly options and may be recycled when it’s past its shelf-life, whereas polyurethane and polystyrene both emit harmful compounds and will need to be handled with care during installation.

To cover your HVAC ducts and air vents during construction, use plastic sheets or drop cloths secured with painter's tape. Be sure to cover all supply vents on your floors and walls, as well as the larger HVAC return vent, which is typically on the ceiling. While canvas drop cloths can also be used, they may not catch all the fine dust. It is crucial to shut off your HVAC system or at least the zone where construction is happening. Running the system with vents sealed can put significant strain on the blower motor and air handler. For additional dust containment, you can also hang plastic sheets over doorways to separate the construction area from the rest of your home.

Although it’s not required, air ventilation in a finished basement can help improve the air quality, prevent moisture and mold issues, keep musty odors away, and also maintain the air quality throughout the rest of your home. Proper ventilation will help maintain the value of your investment in finishing your basement. Try basement ventilation methods like installing vents or a dehumidifier for best results.
