"Remcon did a great job cleaning our home's extensive crawlspace, performing the work in exact conformance with the estimate provided beforehand. First the Remcon team set up a negative pressure environment by tenting the section of hallway between the crawlspace entrance and an exterior door and running a fan to HEPA-filter and exhaust dust generated during the cleaning. They removed stored items, wiped them down, and staged everything neatly in our garage for relocation. They spent at least four hours cleaning the crawlspace as well as sealing small exterior gaps that permitted rodent access and removing fouled insulation. Once the cleaning was done, they installed plastic liner over the entire area. It was a big job and the Remcon team did careful and thorough work the whole way. Afterward, the foreman walked me around the house, explaining exactly what work they performed and how we should maintain it in the future. This is a very conscientious and professional company. Two thumbs up!"

"Bruce replaced the rusted plumbing parts on a PVB connection on the outside water line. They were only able to reuse the backflow devise. A new line with fittings was completed. An outside Stucco repairman was brought in to repatch the stucco, insulation foam and did textured painting for $175 which was included. Work was completed on the first visit."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

One of the biggest disadvantages of glass garage doors is that they are not the best at insulating your garage. In the summer, heat can enter through the glass, while in the winter, heat can escape through the glass, increasing your electricity and gas bills as you crank up your HVAC unit. You can help mitigate the poorer insulation by investing in insulated glass and insulating your garage.

Polyisocyanurate foam, or polyiso for short, has the highest R-value per square inch: 6.5 to 6.8. Polyiso is a rigid foam that comes with a reflective foil on both sides to serve as a radiant barrier. Given its high R-value, rigid foam is usually meant for foundations and basement walls.

R-value stands for resistance value and is a number assigned to insulation that states how good the insulation is at heat transference (insulation). The R-value of injection foam is around 4 which homeowners will be happy to know is actually quite good. Another benefit of injection foam versus fiberglass foam is that the colder it gets, the more injection foam retains its resistance properties, whereas fiberglass tends to lose its efficiency in colder temperatures.

To cover your HVAC ducts and air vents during construction, use plastic sheets or drop cloths secured with painter's tape. Be sure to cover all supply vents on your floors and walls, as well as the larger HVAC return vent, which is typically on the ceiling. While canvas drop cloths can also be used, they may not catch all the fine dust. It is crucial to shut off your HVAC system or at least the zone where construction is happening. Running the system with vents sealed can put significant strain on the blower motor and air handler. For additional dust containment, you can also hang plastic sheets over doorways to separate the construction area from the rest of your home.

R-30 insulation is better for higher thermal resistance, but whether it’s "better" depends on the application. R-30 is much thicker and suited for areas like attics or floors in cold climates, where more insulation is required. R-13, on the other hand, is thinner and works well for 2x4 walls or milder climates where less insulation is sufficient. Choosing between R-13 and R-30 depends on the area being insulated and the climate. For example, R-30 provides more insulation but may not fit everywhere in your home.
