"Michael has done extensive work on our older cabin in Estes Park. The cabin has charm, which Michael appreciated, and it also had multiple problems before he arrived. We made clear that we didn't want to scrape and rebuild. He was willing to work with us, and had good suggestions. His work included extensive sheetrocking, insulating, electrical, plumbing, window replacement, floor refinishing. He was able to take in stride the usual peculiarities that you run into in remodeling work like this. We can now use the formerly 2 season cabin all year around, thanks to Michael. He had also replaced the roof with metal roofing, which was the subject of an earlier review."

Glass Block Windows questions, answered by experts

Installing glass block windows has benefits and disadvantages, as with most materials. The pros and cons can vary depending on the type of glass block and the window location.

Pros

  • Maintains privacy while letting light into the bathroom

  • Energy efficient

  • Sealed to prevent drafts

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Strong and secure

Cons

  • Costly to install

  • Challenging installation

  • Challenging repair

Heavy glass tends to be more expensive than thin glass because it is stronger and more durable. In most cases, ¼-inch-thick glass is ideal for mirrors, and ⅛-inch-thick glass is ideal for residential windows. Heavier glass isn’t always necessary, and can be more challenging to hang or install. Work with a local window installation pro for replacement or new construction windows.

Glass block installation can be relatively expensive due to the range of material costs and the labor time to assemble this type of specialty window. The process proceeds slowly as the glass does not absorb moisture from mortar and silicone caulk takes longer to harden, leaving spacers to hold up the structure until the caulk or mortar begins to cure. Plus, if your current windows have structural issues or damage, you’ll need to repair them before beginning the project, increasing your bottom line.

Yes, many professionals provide custom-cut glass replacements for enclosures that require precise sizing.

Their thickness depends on application, but most glass walls are typically 3/8 to 3/4 of an inch thick. Although it’s not as common, single panes of glass can also be 1 inch thick.
