"The project started well, but on the final day, the contractors unexpectedly claimed they made a mistake and demanded an additional $8000, threatening legal action if not paid. I verified Colorado law, which states they had six months to place a lien on our property, requiring notification within three days of doing so, and by registered mail after the lien was placed. We took no action, avoiding reviews or contact. They have since blocked us from their website and emails. Ultimately, they never placed a lien, and the six-month period has passed. Now that everything is resolved, I want to leave a review. While I am satisfied with the project's outcome, I am unhappy with their conduct, including the legal threats and the last-minute demand for more money. His wife, not him, conducted the final walkthrough and provided the warranty and a statement confirming full payment. He even verbally admitted to putting our project on the "back burner" when I questioned the delay."

Completed work was flawless and included many excellent suggestions that made our kitchen sparkle! Paint went over existing wood cabinets and totally renewed the look of the whole kitchen. Watching the process from prepping, priming, painting and final coat gave us every confidence that this would be extremely durable. Replacing existing hinges with quiet, self closing, hidden hinges and installing bumper pads was a suggestion that improved the quality of the finished product. Countertops typically hang over base cabinets by 1.5 inches. This slight overhang protects cabinet faces from spills and provides a finished look. The overhang may extend 12 inches or more for kitchen islands or breakfast bars to allow for seating and comfortable eating.

There is no official name for an open gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. However, when that area is covered with a boxy shape to hide wires or pipes, this is known as a soffit. In some cases, this area may also be hidden with a bulkhead, a lower ceiling area that fits just above the cabinets.

When comparing wood versus MDF, there are some widespread misconceptions that solid wood is more reliable and durable. Despite this common belief, wood isn't always a superior choice and MDF may be a better building material choice in some cases. Here are some examples:

  • MDF is more affordable than wood. You can buy MDF for as low as one-quarter of the wood price.

  • MDF is a smooth surface with no knots or woodgrain, which makes it easier to finish and cut with a saw.

  • Unlike MDF, solid wood isn't the best option for cabinets or drawers. It can shrink, crack, or bend in response to changes in temperature and humidity, while MDF has a high moisture and fire resistance level and is less likely to break or warp.

You’ll have to make a judgment call. Kitchen ceilings between 8 and 12 feet high typically offer the best-case installations for a new row of cabinets or shelves that will fill the gap. By the time your ceiling reaches 15 feet or higher, as they often do in open floor plans, it’s time to embrace the space and consider toppers that don’t have to reach all the way to the ceiling. You can still get plenty of extra storage with one of our steps above.

Replacing an under-sink cabinet floor can cost anywhere from just a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. The wide range is due to the specific circumstances your cabinet is experiencing. Simple cabinet floor replacement as a DIY task should be at most $100 for materials. However, cabinets with extensive damage or mold could require more extensive work or even replacement that could cost several hundred dollars.
