"Great Door and Gate converted our manual sliding gate into an automated one. They were able to re-use our existing gate, rather than build us a brand-new aluminum one as everyone else had quoted. This cut 1/3 off the cost of the project! I can really appreciate a strong work ethic, and these guys have it! We needed the gate by the end of the year and they got it done - in the snow and freezing temperatures! They really went above and beyond the call of duty."

"Great. The owner of the company came to our home, provided the estimate, and joined his employees to do the painting and replacement of some of the trim, all of which we prefer from a contractor. They completed the job in a timely manner, all were very professional and hard-working. They cleaned up well when the job was completed and the newly painted trim looks great. Would definitely hire them again."

"The timing of the snow slowed our project down a bit. Jason ordered parts, took our gate to his shop to repair it and installed it a few days later. Also, the gate used to sag, which is something I had forgotten to mention but he took care of that as well."

Driveway Gates questions, answered by experts

Other mechanisms can help you keep your gate securely shut. Secure gate latch types will do the job, such as magnetic or spring-loading, self-closing lever varieties, or automatic gate openers. However, they won’t control the speed at which the gate closes. You can purchase slam plates that use rubber buffers to reduce noise and the potential damage-inducing impact of a fast-closing, heavy gate.

Yes, you can convert manual gates to electric operation. Installing a motor and an opening device from a kit allows you to convert any gate so it can open and close automatically. Be sure to buy the correct type of opener for your gate style. For example, some openers are specific to swinging gates, while others are for sliding gates. Get familiar with your swinging or sliding gate parts before you go shopping to avoid having to return to the store for the correct opener.

This largely depends on the layout of your property and your preferred walking route to various entryways. Take your time figuring out the perfect spot for the gate to avoid difficulties later on. With all this said, the best place to put a gate is an area free from obstructions that offer the shortest route to your house.

Installation typically takes 1-3 days, depending on the gate type and site conditions.

The obvious disadvantage of an automatic gate is that it runs on electricity. If the power goes out, it won’t open or close unless there’s a manual override. Many homeowners will need a backup generator so they don’t get stuck on either side of the gate, particularly when looking to park a vehicle. Automatic gates are also much more complicated than manual gates, with tech-heavy components that make them more expensive to repair.
