Small jobs welcome

"Isabel and Ben were great! I had my chimney inspected and cleaned. I also had my dryer vent cleaned. They found very clogged and shoddy vent work in my crawl space for the dryer. They were able to fix, clean and get the duct work up to code same day. They showed me pictures and videos so I could understand the severity of the issue. I appreciate their clear communication throughout the entire process."

"Every time Angela or I look out the back door we're awestruck. We knew basically what we wanted but didn't have any real vision. We just stayed out of the way and magic happened - three absolutely beautiful patios connected with stairs we could never have imagined surrounded by native stone. Artisanship, craftsmanship, professionalism. Extraordinary. Magic."

"Daniel and the team were professional, considerate, honest and timely with their work. We had over 5 bids for our project which was a large investment and went through a long vetting process. Daniel answered all my questions honestly and provided a consultative approach to the project. We had a concrete pour and a deck rebuild D&D could do both, most contractors could only do the deck and said we needed to outsource the concrete elsewhere. The deck project was done in two weeks and the outcome was better than what I had imagined. The team was very clean and picked up all remnants of the materials, I highly recommend D&D for any deck or patio repair, rebuild, or new build. They are honest and hard working, will definitely give a referral or use for any future projects on our house. Glad I found this team. "I cannot recommend Veltkamp Masonry highly enough. Isaac and his team did exceptional work on both my home’s structure and interior. We had a serious issue with our porch foundation that was putting stress on the entire roof. Isaac expertly jacked up and repaired the foundation with precision and care, resolving what could have been a major long-term problem. He also completely retiled our shower and corrected subpar workmanship left by the original builder. The difference is night and day—the attention to detail and quality of finish exceeded expectations. Isaac is knowledgeable, honest, and takes real pride in his work. It’s rare to find someone who can handle both structural repairs and detailed finish work at such a high level. If you want the job done right the first time, Veltkamp Masonry is it."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

You can use a fireplace with a broken damper, but only if the damper is in the open position. If not, your fireplace will not properly vent smoke outdoors. Never operate your fireplace if the damper is sealed shut and you cannot open it, as deadly smoke will quickly fill your home. If your fireplace damper is broken, have it repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

Both vented and ventless gas fireplaces have pros and cons, and the best choice depends on your needs and preferences. A ventless fireplace may be a good option if you do not have a chimney, but you should check local regulations as they are banned in some areas, such as California. On the other hand, if anyone in your household has allergies, asthma, or other respiratory sensitivities, a vented fireplace is a better choice for health and air quality.

A liter of bioethanol costs $11 and burns for around four hours, making it cost around $2.75 per hour to keep your bioethanol fireplace running. For comparison, natural gas costs around $0.50 per hour, and propane costs around $1.60 per hour.

How much it costs you to run your bioethanol fireplace largely depends on how often you use it. Hypothetically speaking, if you run your fireplace for four hours a week year-round, you’ll go through one liter of biofuel per week or about $570 per year to run the fireplace.

There are several ways to determine if your chimney or fireplace damper is open or closed. A simple method is to check for airflow by placing your hand near the fireplace opening; if you feel a draft or hear wind whistling, the damper is open. An open damper might also make the room feel cooler, similar to the outdoor temperature, or cause your HVAC system to work harder than usual. For a more definitive test, you can try a visual inspection, although it may be difficult to see. Alternatively, you can light a small piece of paper and observe the smoke; if it is drawn up the chimney, the damper is open. Always use the damper handle to adjust its position.

You can research your fireplace insert or retrofit by checking out the EPA wood stove database. The database includes information, such as a model's emission rate, efficiency, and carbon dioxide output.
